Best Engine

Hello- I have a 1966 Ford Econoline PU that I want to repower with a diesel- I would like to use a Mercedes Turbo 5 cylinder and auto trans- I think this would make a great combo for power and mpg- The question that I have is what year would be the best to try for this conversion?
(I will need to use a auto trans)
thanks

82-85 300D/CD, 81-85 300TD and 1980-1985 300SD (78-79 had a weaker engine).

Sweet, I love those cabover pickups! That'd be pretty slick swap, is it the straight 6 now?

You want to remember the weight of the 617 combination of engine and transmission. Also that chassis was not the strongest design I have ever seen. So if rust has intruded to any real extent you may want to reconsider. If you know the whereabouts of a spare tailgate for that model let me know..

the 300D 2.5 used in 90,91,92,93, is a more modern engine, what little electronic control they have is easily done away with.Probably not as easy to find as some of the older ones but worth looking for in my opinion.Read some of GSXRs posts and you will learn alot about that engine.Fuel economy will be better than the older engines too. Why not the 300D / 300SDL 3.0L six? The truck should have room since there was an I-6 in the hole.

Maybe a 606 if you want some power, that could be a neat project.

The original inline 6 in that truck was a very small engine i doubt there would be length for a MB 6 cyl, probably be tight for a 5 cyl.Anything can be done if you have money and time. Don

Sorry for the slow reply- been out of town working-- The engine that was in this little PU was a Inline Ford 300CI with a C-4 auto trans- there was enough room in the engine compartment to work around easily enough- so I thought a inline 5 should fit or maybe a 6---
all thoughts are good!!!
thanks

Don't Ford truck engines of that vintage have center sumps vs MB's front sumps?
