Yep, CT is now 20. I've got to go get some "Early American" plates since the town decided that my TD was worth $6K for the assessment. It drops the assessed value significantly. There are some limitations for driving (weekend, to and from shows and meets, educational) since every agency wants their cut, but they're rarely enforced.

I'm thinking "SOOTY" might be cool.

Is the 20 years nation wide or only CT? What about classic car insurance? I've heard they are very inexpensive compared to regular insurance. Anyone use Grundy insurance? Who are the other good classic ins co's? Why is classic car insurance so much cheaper? What's the catch?

The catch is you can't really drive it. It's mostly for garaged cars.

How about this new Georgia tag:
http://motor.etax.dor.ga.gov/motor/plates/plate.asp?ptitle=BD

I told DMV that I thought I should be able to get one for free. They said I was crazy.

Here is the deal in Pennsylvania

As quoted from the PA DMV website:

PennDOT offers three types of special plates for older vehicles:

Antique plates are for vehicles more than 25 years old that are in a condition similar to the original specifications, either through maintenance or restoration. Replicas are not permitted.

Classic plates are for vehicles at least 15 years old that are in a condition similar to the original specifications, either through maintenance or restoration. Replicas are not permitted.

Collectible plates are for reconstructed vehicles that have undergone significant alterations to the original specifications, but have still been maintained in a collectible condition.
To qualify for any of these plates, the vehicle must be primarily used for antique exhibitions, parades, and related activities. The vehicle may be driven one day a week for routine transportation use.

The plates cost $75, and there's also a $22.50 certificate of title fee. These are one-time fees, as the plates are permanent and remain valid for the life of the vehicle, provided there's no change in ownership.
*************************************************

I did not go the route of antique or classic plates, as I did not want to have the restrictions on my daily driving. However, I did tell my insurance carrier that each of my cars will be in the garage for three months out of the year and therefore I get a reduced rate on my liability coverage.

The age varies state to state. CT used to be 25 but they shortened it.

The classic insurance really limits the amount of time and when you can use the vehicle. Most of them require it to be garaged, too.

Yeah, but they look ohh so right on the back of an astral silver SLC! (see my avitar pic)

Here in FL, the car needs to be 30 year model years old. My '78 became eligible for the "antique" tag last september and has been sporting the blue tag since October. There are no restrictions on mileage or anything. The registration drops to a flat $22 (give or take a dollar and some cents) anualy, regarless of weight class. You have your choice of the blue tag or any other plate at the same price.

25yrs old is classic in Colorado. You have to buy 5 yrs worth of registration to get the plates but it means you don't need emissions tests anymore which cost about $65 per year for a diesel so it's worthwhile.

I didn't read about any restrictions on the DMV website, but I don't care either. They will pull me over for a Euro plate up front before that. Besides I only drive the thing 6-7 months out of the year.

Milford decided that my SDL was worth some crazy number, so thats mostly why I got it.

Every state is different, look at the DMV website for whatever state you plan to live in.

Classic car insurance is dirt cheap, the catch is you really can't drive it.

I'm not saying I care, just that it's there for the law-abiding folks. Most cops have better things to do. I'd like to get a Euro plate for the front of mine.

And that's exactly why I'm getting one!

Yep, I really don't like paying $175 a year in taxes on a 21 year old car.

I thought they discontinued the antique plates in Florida??

There are no restrictions on mileage. It will drop my CT personal property tax auto from $45 to $5. Do I still need inspections on a car with CT Early American plates?
