The CT. registry of motor vehicles wanted an extra $5 for the "early american plate.Had i known i was going to save a lot of $$$$ on yearly town taxes,i would have got them.
Connecticut has no car inspection on these old cars. The only time you need an emissions test is if the car was purchased out of state.Never a safety inspection. If the car was purchased in ct.,a vin check is required.

In CO they're called "collector" plates and are good for five years, and cars that are 25 years old or older are eligible. Need to pay a one-time fee of $50 on top of the tag renewal fee, which, since the plate is good for five years, is five times the cost as well, natch. Looks like this:

There is also a "horseless carriage" plate that cars that are 50 years old or older qualify for. Those ones are limited to use in parades, assemblies, etc. Good for five years like the "collector" one, but they all expire on a cycle, regardless of when they were issued. Cycles are 2009, 2014, and so on.

From ct dmv websight:
To obtain an Early American Vanity plate, the vehicle must be twenty years old (model year) or older.

Plate requests are made on the Special Order Plate Application form M-22.

The vehicle must be Currently Registered with Early American plates in Connecticut. If you have another type of plate on your vehicle, you will need to process a plate class transfer by turning in your existing plates and obtaining off-the-shelf Early American plates.

The fee is $96.

RI there are no inspections on vehicles with antique plates, but there are mileage restrictions.

taxes on my 74 are 9 bucks a year. Realistically though, mileage is completely unverifiable, cop would have to stop you, take a reading on mileage, and stop you again, and compare later, assuming your odometer works.

I have regular liability on my 74, and antique plates. Car costs about 50 dollars a year combined insurance and registration

In OH its $25 for a 50 year registration. However you sign a paper saying the car will not be used for "general transportation". I have them on my SL.

However a friend has them on his car, didn't signal when turning. A cop pulled him over and told him since he wasn't at a car show he had the ability to bust his balls over the plates, but was choosing not to. I think unless you've got historical tags on a work truck a stern talking to is about all the "ball busting" they can realistically do.

WV has two types of "antique" plates.

1. A true antique plate for vehicles 25 years and over. There's no mileage restriction, per se, but usage is limited to driving after 4PM on Friday through Sunday or on holidays. There's also an exhibition clause tha allows it to be driven to shows and parades. Pretty draconian, IMHO, and I don't see many around. You do get exempted from annual inspections, however. $65?

2 . There's also a "classic" plate that doesn't have the above restrictions or any benefit for that matter. I think it's mostly a vanity plate. There's a sliding fee scale depending on the expiration date.

Well I got my Early American plates today. Greenwich had valued my 83 300D at $4275 last year and I paid $43 annual tax. I thought the valuation was high but they go by actuall sales price history. I spoke to the Town Tax Dept and now the town will cap the value at $500 so the tax wil now be $5 per year. I called DMV and they said to bring in the plates and $27 to change. At DMV it was rather confusing but they credited $56 for my current registration which had 1 yr, 4 months left, gave me the Early American plates for $7 and charged me a $40 fee for a new registration class and renewed my registration for 2 years stating today. The total net cost was $90. It seems like a good deal or they may have missed something as the regular 2 year registration is $90.

I've got a VW bug and one Benz with early american plates, a VW camper with camper plates, and the other cars with regular plates. The early plates save me a lot in taxes on the cars, and with the camper plate the DMV said to go talk to town hall about the taxes- 'seasonal' vehicle they suggested. Once I see the tax bill on the camper I may change the plates

The best deal on the antique plates was when I registered, insured and stored the bug in CT at my inlaws while I lived in NYC, and that $12 a year tax I paid gave me and my family full rights to the town lake, library, boat launch and dump access.

I have the Mississippi antique plates on my 240D but the standard plates on my 300D because it was cheaper and I wasn't sure if I was going to keep it. Here the antique plates are good for the life of the car but cost about 2x the one year fee.

I did spring for a specialty tag for my Odyssey though

In Indiana there is no savings to having a classic plate so you rarely see them. Wearing my ordinary plates I like to imagine I am traveling along in my three decade old car incognito....

Colorado changed its law a few years ago. It's no longer 25 yrs or older. It's 1979 or older. 1980 and newer cars with collector plates at the time of the enactment were grandfathered in. I missed the opportunity to register my 85TD as a collector vehicle by one year. My 82 Wanderlodge is still a collector. The biggest advantage of a collector plate in Colorado is that yearly emissions tests are not required. In fact, no emissions tests are required at all on collector vehicles until the vehicle changes hands.

So I can't get collector's plates on my car after all? Well, shoot! Why'd they cut it off at 1979? 80's cars certainly aren't getting any younger! (And it'd be nice not to have to do emissions every year...)

I think because of the emissions issue.

No bonus having one here is GA. Actually cost more per year. The TD had a collector plate when I bought it, now just has a standard.

Virginia has an antique plate for 25 years old, and older. One time fee, it was $50. Good for as long as you own it, and no inspections. However limited to occasional use only, like shows, sunday drives etc. Don't know if there is a mileage limit. My old Dodge never saw more then a 1000 a year.
