This thread served as a reminder that I still have zip ties holding up my exhaust. The new donuts are sitting here in my desk. That looks like a good project to christen my reclaimed garage space!

Hey, thank them for pi, and when was the last time you made something that lasted 3000 years? Some think the sphinx goes back 5000 years.

Nearly 30 years back a prosperous friend of mine bought a new 300D. I was hugely impressed (25 years later I purchased the same vintage he had bought new). I still recall his comment -----"Watch the evening news and you'll see MB diesels in all the places where cars must be kept running without dealerships and parts stores". That's still close to true in rural KY.

Always been curious about that. I'm coming over to rural, western Kentucky in a few weeks on business. I'll then mozey on over to Bowling Green, then down to Nashville for a few days - before heading toward the Alabama Gulf.

I grew up in the south, a child of southern parents, so I am a master of "Southern Engineering" (of many use a less PC term down here).

I thought I had seen everthing in the jurry rigging department, until I moved to the Bahamas. Those folks have the worst backwoods engineer beat hands down. Since there is no parts, no dealers, and no real training of any technical skills, things can get very interesting. We dubbed the local Bahamian repair an "Island Mcguyver". I have seen things that would make you cringe....

A 25 gallon drum strapped to a cars roof, to overcome a broken fuel pump.

A huge truck radiator tied to a front bumper, hooked up to hoses through holes punched in the grill, to get cooling.

A generator in the bed of a truck hooked to a window A/C to cool the cab of a pickup!

A 16" split rim tire worn through to the inner tube, the owner pulled the tube, put old firehose inside the tire over the hole, and re-installed the tube (that one lasted over a year).

Many body parts are replaced with wood when they rust away, such as plywood floorboards, windows, and seats.

My personal favorite was a old datsun pickup that we had, which had been undewater (salt) so nothing worked. The engine ran, and the parking break worked, but thats all. Clutch was frozen, so we stated it in first gear, and shut the ignition off when stopping and pulled the handbreak.
Good thing the local speed limit was 15mph in town, and was only about 1 mile from end to end.......................

My recent Kludge... being Canadian none of those other euphemisms, or anti-euphemisms as it were, apply.

Wet winter and the blower quit. I pulled the blower and it works fine so it must be the resistor but nothing within weeks.
So I wired the blower to the rear window demister relay. Rear demister had long failed due to delamination so a useless switch works perfect for defogging the rest of the car on wet, misty, cold mornings. I have had the resistor for some time but don't know where it goes and really don't have the energy (health issues) so demister switch is fine for now...
