84 190D no start?

Long story short, this car was my DD until I bought an S10 Diesel. Anyways, it's been sitting for a while now I had moved it a few times but one day it had a lot of trouble starting. I figured the battery was low from sitting and thought nothing of it. Then another time I actually had to jump it and the strange thing was that all of the lighting and such was very very dim. Fast forward to today. I'm trying to get it running because I'm getting ready to pull the engine and I would prefer to drive it to the garage I'm going to do the work at rather than tow it. Tried jumping it and couldn't get it to start and I decided I wasn't going to play with that battery so I swapped in the battery out of my F250 Diesel. After cranking, and cranking and cranking it will NOT start.

The only other shred of help I can offer, is that it is very low on fuel but I know it had at least one gallon in it because I put it in right before I parked it.

Ok, now I'm not sure what to say... I've used starting fluid before to diagnose if a car had a few problem. So I figured I'd give that a shot. I did not expect it to help the car start and stay running though so what would starting fluid change that cranking would not???

Dont use starting fluid,wd40 is what you want.Is it turning over fast enough? Is something binding up? a pully .How long was it sitting up for? Ive found removing the injectors and adding some marvel mystery oil works wonders on an old long sitting diesel ,just remmeber to take the heat shields out of the holes when you purge the mm out. They sit down in the injector hole freely ,use a stick magnet and pull them out before bumping your motor over to spray the excess mm out.You also might want to lay something above the motor ,it really sprays everywhere.

Tow start?

How about a nice tow start?

If it won't fire by cranking, are you sure the glow plug circuit is working?

I know that air in the fuel system will definitely take a while to get out by cranking. Even when I change fuel filters and fill the new one up as much as possible with fresh diesel, it takes a lot of cranking to get it going again.

I like the long hill, get 'er rollin, pop the clutch method. If it doesn't start by the bottom of the hill, something is definitely wrong, and then I have to tow it back up anyway.

SteveM.
