Unhappy Interior engine rust - beyond help?

I've been hesitating to post this, but my $100 1976 240D (very good body and most else) has rust in the valve train, with some showing on the injector tips too. I bought this as a project and am not hesitant to replace the engine (if I can find one, that is). Before all that, is there some net wisdom on derusting an engine that works? I haven't really reefed on it yet, but preliminary attempts to manually crank over at crankshaft are failing. Rings could have become one with cylinder walls - ycch.

Any hope for this one? Or, have a beer and get on with my life .....

Atf.

What do you have to lose? It's junk now, correct?

Pour some ATF into the injector holes, let it soak in for a couple of days. Then try to turn it over by hand.

Once you can get it to turn by hand, then hook up the starter, fire it up, and drive away.

Marvel Mystery or even PB Blaster type stuff in a pourable container should work. Just change the engine oil.

Marvel mystery oil gets my vote for stuck pistons and rings, take out the injectors and pour a 1/4cup in each cylinder.Let it sit a week or so if it gets so you can turn it with a wrench be sure to cover the injector holes with rags and spin the engine with the starter before you put the injectors back in.
