W210 Startup

I would apprciate some advice.
When replacing glowplugs one, closed to rear of the engine, broke. I removed the starter + oil filter housing to be able to work and try to removed. It was not possible.

Then I put everything back, including reconnecting the Crankshaft sensor, and the manifold, except that I forgot to connect the two tubes, one EGR, to it. I reconnected the battery and tried to start the car. After a few cranks started.

Then I turned the engine off, bolted the manifold properly, connected the tubes to the manifold, reconnected the fuel lines to a diesel purge bottle so I could clean the system a little bit. Then I recranck without any success. I checked the transparent fuel line going to the diesel purge and they are empty.

Do you have any advice to get it started?

Yes,
The lines are made of transparent plastic having copper tubes at the end to connect them to the rubber fuel lines of the car.

HUH? If the car is a W210 the proper way to do the DP is to connect fuel hose to the line which goes into the top of the pre-filter and the main return line which is the plastic "T" coming out of the back of the filter housing...don't know what "copper tubes" you are talking about. What year/model is your car?

The car is a 99 with 210k miles on it.
To connect the transparent plastic tubes I am using to the rubber fuel lines in the car I use a 1/4 " copper tubing.
I will try the way you suggest.
By the way I noticed that the transparant line in the car going from the fuel filter to the fuel delivery pump located on the fuel injection pump is empty about 1 inch near the fuel filter.

The best way to do it is to canabalize one of the plastic lines (the one which goes from the fuel pre-heater to the inlet of the pre-filter). I saved one of them from the last time I replaced the line, cut it off with an inch or so of plastic line left at the end which fits into the top of the pre-filter and slipped a rubber hose over the plastic hose and clamped it on tight. That is the inlet to the fuel system. Then, just pull the rubber hose off the end of the plastic "T" return outlet and replace it with a piece of hose. Stick those two hoses into a clean bottle and fill with DP and you are good to go.

I've done some more checking. When I turn the ignition key into 2 position I hear the click of the shutoff valve opening. So I don't think there is something with the valve.

It seems that K40 relay works as well.

I'm guessing you disconnected the feed and return lines at the firewall and pluged into them there. Some do it that way. I perfer the method NHDOC described, but, that is mainly because I also have an old fuel line making the connections quick and easy.

Sounds like you ran the DP dry and now need to reprime again. Start with filling both the prefilter and main filter with fuel or atf thn reistalling. Then crank 30 secs at a time, rest 10, then crank again, etc. After a few tries you should let it sit for an hour so the starter motor can cool.

Thank you Terry. However I did not open the fuel filter or pre-filter for that matter. I just connected the DP to the fuel hoses near the firewall. I did not work. Then I reconnect the hoses from the fuel filter back to the metal fuel lines. Then I cranck it 3 times and then I let it be. Could it be the ctrankshaft sensor or is there something else?

Open the prefilter and main filter and check to see if they are full of fuel.

Will bet you the main filter at least is empty.

Here is how the rest of us do the DP. E300TD diesel purge proceedure solved!

And a helpul GP extraction thread. http://alan.mcreynolds.googlepages.com/howtoremovebrokenglowplugs-mercedesom606

Did you disconnect ANY of the fuel lines at the lift pump or shutoff valve prior to having this problem? They are very easy to cross and if you don't put them back right the pump will never draw any fuel.
