The reserve light check function is part of the gauge cluster starting in the late 82 revision.

I just run mine to 425-450, the light usualy comes on just past 450. But I don't like getting it that low.

Meaning what? What "check function" do you speak of? We have two '83's and the light doesn't work on either, but the bulb is good.

You've got problems with the sending unit.

When you turn the key the light comes on with all the other cluster lights.

550 is my average, 600 isn't unheard of though, the best I ever managed was 625 but that was really pushing the end of the reserve.

Yep, I know.....none of them read quite right. My dad's SD and the D read fairly accurate, no idea on the project SD, but my car stops at half....then it will suddenly sometimes fall down to R when I've run it really low. I intend to take apart the sender sometime soon when I've run the fuel down a ways. I already bought two spare gaskets......

My 80 240D did not come with the function. After installing the temp-oil-fuel-economy gauge set from an 83 250 the light test works the same as it would on a later model.
