OM617 Oil Filter

Are there any "kits" out there to replace the oil filter on a 617 to something more along the lines of a spin on canister?

I have never heard of such a thing.
Why would you even want to do it? You'd be getting a smaller oil filter, which means to me less surface area=faster clogging. I don't think replacing the current filter is that hard, really.

Is your goal better filtration or convenience in filter changing?

I have not read about any but have thought about it.

Due to the Oil Cooler inlet, outlet, and Thermostat for the Oil Cooler being part of the Oil Filter housing it makes a modification more difficult.

The one easiest way I could think of the do this would require the upper 50% of the Oil Filter Housing to be milled off and what ever is necessary to fix it so that a spin on would go in. The really undesirable part of this is that the opening of the filter would be facing down; meaning during a filter change there would be a big mess when it is removed.

It could also mean that when the engine is stopped the oil might drain out of the Oil Filter so that when you restart you would be starved of oil. I do not know if there would be an easy remedy for that.
I don't know that there would be room enough to mount the filter in a different position.

Another possible would be to remove the Oil Filter Housing completely and replace it with a plate that has hose fittings and route hose to a remotely mounted Oil Filter housing. There would be no more Thermostat for the Oil Cooler, you would have an extra set of hoses that could leak later and you would have to run the Oil Cooler Hoses to the Remote Oil Filter Housing.
I think the negatives out weigh the positives of leaving the filter housing as it is.

If your goal is better filtration it is inexpensive and easier to install a bypass oil filter system.

The engine's going in my YJ, where a 4.0 sits now, so room isn't an issue. I was simply curious if such a thing existed.

I've seen something along those lines, you drill into the canister, route lines to another filter, and back somehow.
Good luck.

Don't expect folks on a Mercedes site to know what a YJ is. It's a Jeep thing, they won't understand.

How is that 617 lower oil pan going to work with an axle in the way? The 4.0L oil pan is shallow up front and deep in the back.

There was a post on this forum describing a company which does a dry sump kit for the 617 (which also does not use the stock filter) just for such an application, This would be nice for steep angles too. As for just the filter housing adaptor, they do exist, my friend has one for a 617 swap into a Land Rover, some LandRover nut in CT made it custom. I'll see if I can get his info.
Happy trails, I'm doing some crazy wheelin' tomorrow in the Samurai, that VW diesel performs excellent in this thing, I just completely rebuilt the motor and installed it a couple of months ago.

It's got about 5" of spring lift and 1.25" of body, so I'm hoping to be able to raise the 617 high enough for clearance. And I don't see an issue moving the 617 to one side an inch or two.

Fawk it...It can wait. Once I get the 617 in and running, then I'll diddle with filter.

Jim Something, from Series Trek. That's where I saw the pics of a plate like that - on his site...Thanks for triggering the memory...I spoke to him about 6 months ago, When I get the 617 in, I'll give him a call

The plan is to install the 617, convert it to WVO, and turn the YJ *back* into my daily driver/trail rig. I've been running a 98 Sububan on WVO for almost 3 years now, so that part I'm fine with...

Yes but you would have to order it from India, the newer OM616 direct inection made here comes with a spin on cannister instead of the typical MB filter.

dieselrover at this site(Jim from seriestrek) has made a plate. you can easily run remote filter(s) and a thermostat + hoses to the cooler.

I sure would like to see a pic of that filter mount--and pics of the whole direct injection 616!
