W126 Window Switch Carbon Build Up
 

My 87 300SDL has a sticky driver's side window switch....

I read in the star magazine that carbon build up is the culprit...

It shows how to fix the button unit itself, however only says how to remove the switch from older door placed buttons. It says the fix is the same, but i dont know haw to remove the switch from my console, does anybody have instructions or even any hints as to how this can be accessed?

In the W123 models, the switches are attached to the console wood. You remove the wood, disconnect all of the electrical plugs, and take the assembly to a workbench where you can release the switch you want to work on.

In the W124 cars, the console wood is in effect a cover and the switches plug into a bank of sockets that are attached to the frame of the console. You remove the wood and then unplug the switch you want.

I don't know how it is with your car but has to be something similar.

In many cases, a sticky switch is caused by spilled soft drinks or coffee. You can tkae the switch apart, clean all the bits and pieces, and put it back together. Warning: do the disassembly on a soft piece of terrycloth or in a shallow box (shoebox lid) so that the balls and springs and other tiny bits and pieces stay with you.

how do you remove the wood from the console? i don't want to damage anything

1) Pull out the ashtray.
2) Find the two phillips screws that secure the ashtray and remove them.
3) Pull out the entire ashtray housing and remove the wires for the lighter and the light.
4) Remove the plastic coin tray.
5) Slide the entire console wood forward about 1/2". The console wood is now free of the console.
6) Reach underneath and unplug the seven connectors............five for the window controls..........one for the mirror..........one for the fader.

Now you can deal with any switch in the console from your workbench.
