Vacuum Headache

Although I think my daughter looks cute opening the hood to shut down her car at school, she disagrees.

I need some help on this one.

The locks and engine shut down don't work. The vacuum pump appears to be working because the brake test works and other lines are drawing. In comparing my 300TD (which is working) to my 300D (which is not), I've discovered which line is not drawing vacuum. Am purchasing the vacuum pump today but still a bit confused at where to start.

After doing a thorough search and study, I'm going to test the check valve and key switch. My Chilton's manual is lame in this area.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Don

I have never had to do this but here is how I would go about such a task:

Buy a "mighty vac" and hook it up to all the hoses on the firewall going into the cabin and see wich leaks and trace it. Alot of the times the vacuum pistons inside the doors that work the locks break, They are like $25 each.

Good luck

John

Smile Thanks to all

Thanks "turbo" and others. Bought the mighty vac today and asked alot of questions, printed 15 pages from the search function and prayed. Found the vacuum leak and it works now. Broke one part which I'll have to order.

I'd bet it was the shut down vac switch

Greetings DD,

Do a search on vacuum shut off valve and vacuum shut off valve and you should bring up my lengthy thread on what and where to test your shut off vacuum switch on the key switch. I believe this to be either leaking air or seaping enough to cause your problems for shut off and vac locks. I would also look at your ignition switch and see if it is dripping oil, if so please repost asap with problem.

Thanks,

Charles

Wise Words

Hey Can-Do & Donkey:

Already did the extensive search and yes "Can-Do", I used your long thread and it really helped. Fortunately, the leak was in the engine compartment so I didn't have to go to the key switch. All the color-coding data really helped.....believe me.
Next vacuum project is to bring the doors up a bit quicker. They work but it resembles maple syrup in January......slow.

Thanks to all.

Cool

I too had engine shutoff problems, and upon shutdown, the engine would almost shut off, but not completely. So, it would sputter for a little while.

Anyway, I found the vacuum leak in the hose leading to the rear head-rest releases. That was located under the rear seat !

My friends don't let me forget that one ... engine would not turn off, and fix was located under the rear seat !
