Odometer Nightmare!
My 240D has a donor Speedometer off of some trubo diesel at a junk yard. My original gas and temp gauges were non functioning, so I thought what the hell, and took the whole instrument cluster and replaced as needed. My trip counter wasn't working on my original speedometer so I replaced it with the donor. I was a bit sad about this because my original odo had 301,000 miles on it.
The new one I put in worked real well but had only 198,000. I finally hit 200,000 on it but wanted my 300,000 miles back. So following Diesel giants instructions on how to take it apart (and having practiced on my original and totally messed it up) I ended up getting the 3 instead of the 2! put it back in and the gears turned. Everything seemed perfect until it started slipping again and not counting. I took it apart once again and made a fatal error, as I pulled the main bar out that held the little black gears with the numbers, they all fell out of place and after that, it was a complete mess/nightmare. I got so frustrated after trying for hour to realign them and getting no results other than the numbers I didn't want and numbers only coming up halfway that I literally threw it outside and decided, I'll just get another one at the junkyard tomorrow. Does anyone have any advice on a smoother way of doing this? I feel as though, since my little 240 has done 300,000 in her life, it should be shown and not cheated by 100,000. I guess it kind of worked out for the best though, this speedometer went to 125, want my 85 one back.

I ruined Norms trying to fix it myself too. The next one I bought had to be sent in to be fixed. I believe it was about $75.00 and a two week turnaround.

Where did you send it into? I think I might try it one more time, depending on the mileage of the next one I get. But 75$ is very doable....

Perhaps you could e-mail him and see if he could crank the thing up to 300k again for you. Only MB diesel owners would probably make such a silly request.

Trick to correcting odometer reading
I just finished fixing my odometer per the dieselgiant instructions, but I added one step to ease the work: I rounded the end of the shaft holding the front gears (the 'paddle' gears positioned between each number dial). After rounding the end of the shaft, I pulled it out just enough to release the number dials from the paddle gears and the odometer can be set at whatever you want.
You don't need to mess with anything else to simply change the odometer reading. When you finish, simply position the paddle gears back into alignment between the number dials and push the shaft back into position through the hole. Use vice grips to smash the rounded shaft-end flatter to prevent it from pulling through. I added the estimated 5,000 miles lost while the odometer was inoperable to my new reading and it works perfectly. |

I've fixed a several 123 odos using the 'crimp the shaft with a small bolt cutter, using a drill to follow the shaft" method.
Sometimes it seems your right on the edge of bending the shaft getting that crimped on keeper "hammered' off or putting it back on. I watched a friend do it and he bent that sucker. Keeping the gear on the shaft seems like the easy part

If you would like to send them to me I will repair them with a new lifetime warrantied gear for $130 including shipping back to you. My turn around time is only one day plus shipping time. Those instructions that you are using from diesel giant are ok but only for a temporary fix, this will last forever. if you have any questions feel free to email or call me.
