what do the climate controls mean?

I am chasing down a climate control problem in a 300td year 1983 and knowing what the buttons mean would be hugely helpful. A labeled diagram or picture would go a long way here. Also, if anyone is interested, here is the prob.

The A/C isn't working, and no matter what buttons I push I can't get the compressor clutch to lock up. Any suggestions. The compressor has been installed for less than a year according to the receipt included with the car, PO said that he could not get it to work, even after the replacement. I believe that the issue is in the dash controls/solder.

Oh, and before i get the "order a shop manual" speech, I have already and I am waiting for them to arrive. Hopefully soon!

Anyone have an extra owners manual they want to part with? I'll buy

I see that I left out my make and year up there. I did search and could not come up with a diagram or picture of the actual controls, so that is really what I need. I mean, what is supposed to happen when I push the button with the two white arrows, for example.

I do have fan, and the various switches seem to be working but I am unsure. Which one would actually lock the clutch?

From the left:

Button 1: Defrost: Blower at high speed, temperature at maximum, defrost vents open. a/c compressor engaged.

Button 2: Blower runs in stages 3-5. In heating mode, air goes to defrost vents, side vents and legroom vents. In cooling mode air goes to above and also to center vents. a/c compressor engaged.

Button 3: Blower runs in staged 2-5. In heating mode air goes to legroom and side vents. In cooling mode air goes to center vents and side vents. a/c compressor engaged above 4C.

Button 4: Same as button 3 without any a/c compressor.

Button 5: All vents closed. Blower not operating.

Blower stages 2-5 are possible only in the automatic mode. Stages 1 & 6 are manually selectable except in Defrost, which is always stage 6, regardless of mode selection.

one other thing, is the auto mode a button? It seems like it ought to be but mmy fingers either won't allow me to push it all the way in, or it will not stay depressed.

It's not a button........per se. It serves only to release the high speed and low speed buttons. The default positon is the "auto" position.

So the defrost only works on maximum heat? I thought something was wrong with mine, its brutal in the summertime when its raining to have the heat blowing in my face like that....

If you don't need maximum defrost select the button one to the right. That gives you some defrost.
