Thermostat and Mileage
Can having a proper functioning thermostat affect mileage?
Mine was messing up so I just took it off and I haven't gotten around to putting the new one on yet.

There MUST be a thermostat in the system for it to flow water correctly. Its a mixing valve and without one the water will just circulate around the block and not get cooled.

proper operating temperature (or even a wee bit hotter) and good MPG are related.

I thought that it was just me but --- my 300SD gets better mileage when it runs hotter. My radiator is dirty and I need to clean it but the mileage is up and I don't want to mess that up. 27mpg at highway speeds (70 +) compared to 24.-- normal
