Rear Axle Question
I have a 1983 240D and when backing it out of the garage the rear axle clanks, sometimes it does this, other times it's quiet. When it does clank though, it's sort of loud. Also I notice when I'm slowing down at an intersection I can hear a sort of very fast thudding/winding down sound of the axle as I come to a stop. I need schocks really bad and someone told me it might be due to this, that there is too much load on the rear axle. Anyone know?

Check the sway bar links for slack by grabbing the end of the bar and pulling up and down. When worn they will 'clunk'.

If it makes the noise all of the time when you back up you could have someone (someone who is careful enough and likes you enough not to drive over your foot) drive while you stand by the side and listen and observe. Maybe it would help identify where the sound is coming from.
