ARRRRGH! I broke the speedo slot on tailshaft
my 85D with bad crank, pulled engine/tranny. but broke the tailshaft housing where the speedo cable connects... not sure what I did wrong, but it broke right off.
now pulling cover off 82 dead tranny, to swap onto 85 tranny, but the part #'s on the covers are different. the appear identical though. are the part #'s on the tail cover for the entire transmission or just the covers? should the covers swap over without issue? or will I need to source an 85 tranny to pull a cover off of? |
That is really weird, we have a spare trans from an '85SD, and whoever pulled it managed to break off a chunk of the housing around where the speedo sensor bolts in. Coincidence??

Seems like there has been a run on broken tailshaft housing speedo cable connectors in the last few months. I think the consensus is to use JB Weld or some sort of epoxy for the fix.

JB Weld to the rescue
I just fixed mine this weekend after someone here suggested JB Weld (thanks!). Hopefully it will last for awhile.
Some day I hope to build an entire car out of JB Weld. george |
I wonder if the part no difference has to do w/ the different final drive ratio??
jb should be perfect for that app. I broke one, too, when I did a swap this spring. it was on the good(?) tranny connected to the bad engine which is now in storage. I will cross that bridge when I need to. |
