New Stereo for 84 MB300D.Easy job... NOT !
1. ) The original Elektronic AM-FM-Cassette Player has bitten the dust.
...actually- looks like it got bit by black engine oil, from a leak behind the climate control panel. Any ideas what caused that ? I was going to slip a thin sheet of aluminum between, to protect the new stereo, but....where IS that oil coming from ? 2. ) How to connect the Power Antenna. Original radio power harness has 4-wire connector, and separate ground wire. Here's how far I've gotten: MB red = +12v-----------------to new stereo yellow MB grayish=--------------------??? MB black=switched +12v-------to new stereo red MB brown ----------------------??? It plays CD's, just fine, thank you. Of course it won't do 4-way speaker control from the new stereo, unless I want to take apart the panel with the front-rear balance control,so I'll probably leave it. Anyway,how does the power antenna connect ??? I turned everything on, and tried the new stereo BLUE wire to the MB gray, then to the MB brown. Nothing. Maybe some combination of both ? Or does it need a special adaptor ? Thanks for any ideas here ! |

Dont know if this helps but for my 87 300d i went to crutchfield.com and printed the picture of there adapter harness and matched from there.. Everything works including power antenna...i did not want to wait for harness to ship..i did still leave still leave the console mounted speaker fader connected for ease of installation..

brown is ground in europe.
you can get into the wiring between the deck and fader to access wiring to all 4 speakers. and thus eliminate the fader controls. the power antenna is also controlled by the switch above the deck. did it work before?? I think it is the gray one. do a search in the audio section, it has all been hashed out before.

I have to say this - there are several write ups on how to bypass the center console fader switch. Its really easy. It took me 5 minutes.
The oil is coming from oil in the vac system that is draining oil- a P.O. may have let a vac issue go to long and some oil was sucked into the system is now draining out of the climate control switches. You want to check the vac system for leaks and the climate control behind the panel for a leaky vac hoes. You can disconnect it and drain it but 1st make sure the vac system doesn't leak.

On the car's original radio, I believe the power wires (which are wired into the plastic insert that plugs into the original radio) are as follows:
Brown = ground Black = switched 12v (comes on with the key) Gray = illumination 12v (supposed to switch on when you put on your lights - I ignore this one) Red = constant 12v (to keep your stereo presets etc.) The wire for the power antenna, which you should connect to your new radio's blue lead apparently, is separate from these four. If I remember correctly, it is black, and unless it has been modified from the original equipment, it has one of those spade connector terminations. Good luck, Gene 1983 300d (133k) 1983 300sd (118k)

Mine had oil in it as well. This was caused by a bad engine shut off valve. I used Gumout carb cleaner sprayed on a rag and wiped all the wires and vacuum lines off.
Also w/the new radio I have, the power antenna only goes up or down. The switch does make the antenna go down when in the off position, for playing CD's. In the middle position, the head unit controlls the antenna. The up or max position for the antenna does not function.
