front shock rubber bushings

I have a 85 300D turbo, and I changed my front shocks yesterday. Replaced what looked like the originals with bilstein/heavy duty. The replacement hardware had two rubber bushings in it. My friend told me that was for other models that use that part #. I want to make sure that I needed to put on rubber below and above. The old shock only had the upper in the engine compartment. Would not having the lower in hurt the shock? Road fine.

rubber on either side of the body mount. always. nothing suspension related should ride "hard" without bushings.

The bushings are sometimes put inside the plastic cover making them invisible, but they should be there.

when I took the dust covers off of the new ones the weird white plastic thing was on there. I installed the cover and mounted it, with one "black" bushing under the new dust plate and nut.

It should be a rubber bushing on each side of the fenderwell.

I agree, rubber on both sides.
Reuse the old ones on top if you have too or you can buy new ones on this site.

It can bang through the fenderwell, so be careful. Best bet would be not to drive it.
