Unhappy Double Whammy on Ol' Turbo... Tough decision.

*edit* I was wrong, the head gasket is fine.

Thats an odd and early failure for a 617, at 182k? Wow.

I'd fix it....do the work yourself and it won't cost that much.

If you have to sell a car to fix the others then perhaps having three mercedes as a college student is a bit too much?

No need for financial advice. I think I'm doing pretty well for myself considering my age. I don't need to sell it, and I may not go through with it, but it I would take comfort in a little extra cash.

Oh man, if that car wasn't halfway across the country I'd be crazy for it. I had one in the same color. Mine was a basket case but it looked so good....

Wow, bummer Tyler!

Are you sure it isn't pinhole leaks in a hose or the rad?

I guess the white smoke is pretty damning.
Hope you find a way to keep your 'family' together!

I think you've put enough money into Ol Turbo to warrant keeping it.
Especially after that paint job, it's a beautiful car.
Of course, Ol' Norm is beautiful as well- though possibly less versatile, due to no turbo, and who knows how many problems you'll encounter with it as time drags on.
A head gasket could be done for far less than an engine rebuild, if you've caught it early enough. Especially if you do a lot of the prep work yourself (removing linkages, air filter, injectors, glow plugs, etc). And a used turbo could last you a long while. So hopefully the costs won't be too exorbitant?
Good luck with your tough decisions!

Just do all the work yourself, I think you can do it. I can't believe the headgasket is gone at 182K.

Nah, it won't need a rebuild, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed on no warped heads!

The turbo won't need replacement either, there's plenty of threads on seal/drain tube replacement.

Hey Tyler,

Take comfort in your 3 beautiful vehicles that may need some work every now and then. I don't think you would be happier with the cash over Ol' Norm. You're young and will make a lot of money over the years. There aren't many Ol' Norms out there and you will most likely regret letting him go.

EDIT: Oh Yeah ... handling repairs like this will give you the stones to be able to raise your future kids on w123's.

Removing the head myself? Sound like a mess! How am I going to be able to tell if its warped?

Put a straight edge on it or take it to a shop and have a mechanic look it over.

The little roll eyes animation is about the equivalent of a good "F.U.", which was certainly unwarranted, along with your unsolicited and lame arse comment above.
Might be OK for some forum Nimrod, but that hardly applies to Tyler.
Usually get better out of you pawoSD.......

OK now Tyler, Nimrod, don't even think about selling old Norm!!

It was meant as sarcasm, I don't say "F.U." to anyone, ever.

Here's what I'm thinking:

Valve cover... I can handle

Exhaust Manifold....Easy peasy

Glow Plugs/injectors... Hope they don't break, but the head is going out any way.

Head... Involving removing the timing chain and what else?

Why does my 1,000th post have to be on a sour note?

The glow plugs are easy to get out, a good key to removal is to have the engine warm beforehand, they will come out way easier. Also a shot of "Freeze-off" penetrant spray on the glow plug while the motor is warm helps.

I've never removed a head before, but it doesn't look that hard, I will be removing the one on our dead engine soon to salvage parts. In fact, it likely has a good head on it (it had a piston problem)....so if your head is warped and you need one.... Its also a good opportunity to replace the timing chain etc...
