Question W201....190D.....questions about repairs....

Folks,

First, I have 2 broken lug bolts on the rear of my 190D (1 on each side). Must I change the entire half shaft to replace the "hub" on the axle??

Second, This car is an '84 190D and has the windshield wiper that parks in front of the passenger. I also have an '85 190E. parts car, that has the "panoramic" or "jumping" wiper. I need to swap the HVAC blower, so it will require removal of the wiper and it's associated linkage and motor. Can I swap the wiper assemblies....I was told that they are incompatible......???

Are there any drawbacks to the newer wiper design...i.e. should I try to swap them??

SB

Note: I have had the car over to a machinist friend of mine, and he attempted to drill and easy out the lug bolts.....they will not budge with any sort of easy out that we have......he said it was the first time that he could not remove a broken stud.....

I found a reference to pulling the "Rear Axle Shaft Flange" with the "Rear Axle Installed" in MB Manual Section # 35-130......

Do I need the special tool # 201 589 00 61 00 ??

Can't swap wiper assemblies.

As far as I'm concerned, you cannot swap the wiper assemblies. The later style wiper assembly requires the use of a completely different windshield. If you look at the bottom edge of your windshield, it should be straight across the bottom.

The later one for the articulating wiper, has a curved area which is "cut out" at the bottom center of the windshield. This "cut out" accomodates the extra size of the later model wiper system.

Jetmugg is correct. I actually was playing around at the junk yard with this idea. Only to discover it don't fit.

Wow....they sure are different in the area of the windshield wiper......I just had to pull the wiper of the '85 "E" to get to the blower......I would have never thought that they would have made that big of a manufacturing change to accommodate a newer style windshield wiper.....
