Kerry beat me to it, Yah, the teardrop would look very nice with "painted to match" wheel covers behind the 240D. I was going to build one a few years ago. The "teardrop" sleeping quarters would lift off and you'd have a big wheel 6x8 flat bed trailer. but alas, "Boeing Surplus" closed down, my source of aluminum

First, I would add a good transmission cooler.
I have a friend with a 123 240D and he tows a Burro? or Casita, (not scamp< but similar) around with it. He installed the 123 T(wagon) hitch from curt on the 240. fit was perfect except the exhaust has to come out the side like a TD. the best deal on that hitch I know of is JCWhitney. just short of $200, delivered. it is a receiver style, 3500lbs. He actually bought one camper, then found a lighter one(150Lbs?) and has the heavier one for sale. still under 1000Lbs empty. I tow quiet frequently with the wagon, same hitch, I feel it is a superb tow vehicle. plenty of torque with up to 2K lbs trailer. I have moved more than that with it, though. does the car have a right side mirror? a must.

I towed a love bug similar to the casita a long time ago when I only had a couple of kids with a saab and then a volvo. No special modifications to the car. Some kind of leveling hitch would make it better though.
The wiring of the trailer and car were incompatible though since the euro cars have separate bulbs for the turn and brake signals. I solved it by adding separate lights for this on the back of the trailer. Tom W

There's an adapter available now to solve that problem. It converts the two buld system on the car into a single bulb system for the trailer.

Where can one find this adapter? I made one that only half way works using diodes...

I'd love to get a little teardrop someday, when just the Mrs. and I can escape for a long weekend.
I've been toying with the idea of getting a smaller pop-up. Even though there's a little more effort before departure and drying out after rain, there's quite a bit of room to move around and still be able to cook inside and use the portapotty. The teardrops would definitely tow nicely. I'd imagine a pop-up would be close since it would be below the roofline of my TD. For those that have towed a Scamp/Burro/Casita, is the extra windage much of an issue? Even on of those would be tight for me but a little more compatible than a teardrop at this stage.
