New oil filter gaskert

After I had changed the oil filter on Max, I went to throw away the box and realized I hadn't changed the gasket when I put the top of the cannister back on. Is this a big problem? I haven't done one of these before and don't know how critical that really is.

Probably not as long as the one that is one there isn't brittle or hard. It would only take five minutes to pull the canister top off and put the new o-ring on though.

I guess I'll put it on. I'd rather be safe than sorry. This was the first time I've done a diesel oil change myself. I'm going to have to buy a box of those gloves. That diesel oil is NASTY!

Did you topside it or pull the plug? I like to put a Post-it inside the glove box lid or on the visor to remind me when I need to do the next one.

This was the first time I've used the Mity Vac I bought recently. I had imagined the whole process would be MUCH cleaner than it turned out to be. Me changing the oil in Max was probably pretty funny to anyone watching. I probably looked like a little kid with a paint brush . . .

Sometimes I can change the oil and not drop a drip and barely get dirty. Other times I feel like I might as well just pull the drain plug and let it drain in the drive way, because thats were it's going to end up anyway. Once you do it a few times you'll know the process and it will only take a few minutes and you'll barely get dirty. I think the messiest part for me it taking the filter out of the canister.

LOL

That's what those plastic bags from ACME are for. Pick it up and turn it inside the bag like a dog owner cleaning up after their pet.

I now have a new set of "oil change" clothes . . . .

At first I couldn't figure out why the old one was so short. That's when I felt around inside the cannister and discovered the bypass filter. Previously, I was only used to the spin off type oil filters that American cars all seem to have.

Last year someone did a pole on how many people change the upper O-ring on the oil filter.
A fair amount of people felt it is not leaking do not change it.
I change mine I guess 90% of the time. If I am in a hurry I leave the old one on.

I always change it, but as some have stated, unless it's visibly bad, you can use it again.

Well, I'm off to the store to get some gloves and degreaser, maybe even a hazardous materials suit while I'm at it.
