AC fan

I have whats probably a pretty dumb question, Does the AC fan run when ever the AC is on? My 85 240D has an after market AC which is seldom ever used, so I dont know much about it, it always worked when I needed it. Last summer in Ca I had the system flushed and the guy mentioned the fan runs when ever the AC is on,..that so?

You mean the blower in the passenger compartment or the electric fan in front of the radiator?

An '85 240D? Do tell more

The aux fan (I presume this is what we're talking about) in front of the condenser only turns on at a certain temp, if the refrigerant temp is too high, if memory serves me right. Others have rigged it so it stays on when the AC is on, but that depends on your location of course.

Right, the fan in front of the condenser, would there be any harm is running it all the time when the AC is on or do I need to find out where this sensor is??

240Ds were built through 1985 just like the rest but were not sold over here for some reason.

I have an 84 euro 240d with an aftermarket ac system probably very similar to yours. The aux fan should run and only run when your ac system is on.

With an aftermarket system. In a OE system it only runs when the freon gets up to a specific temperature and trips a switch on the receiver/dryer.

Rigging the fan to start when the AC goes on will hurt you in cold weather.

The sensor is on the receiver/dryer.

I must be missing something, but why would I have the AC going in cold weather? Now I have it hooked up to a switch (OEM dome light switch) on the console, which works fine, but its not "idiot proof" (some idiot could forget too turn it on) In this way the fan could be used any time for extra cooling, which, of course shouldn't be needed if everything is working right, but nice to have I guess.

Your question was "would there be any harm is running it all the time."

I simply answered your question.

You would have the system going in cold weather when you want to use the defroster on a cold day.

Ah, I see whats going on, I believe you have climate control, which I dont have in the 240D, meaning my AC is not connected to the defrosters, meaning I wouldn't be using AC in cool weather. At least thats the way I think it works which also answers dannym's post, I think

I just had a flashback to my first car, a '73 VW Superbeetle.
I had to defrost the inside of the windshield every couple of miles with a cassette case.

In every car I've ever had with a/c, the a/c works far better to defrost the interior than the defrost setting itself. The drying effect of the a/c is what does it.
