I have the new seals ready to go and I was looking at a bearing packer yesterday after hearing Chad's positive review on this tool. I didn't even know it existed. It looks like the way to go. I'll go with the hi temp wheel bearing grease as well. The wheel bearings should be OK as there are only 38K miles on this car, believe it or not.

if the races are not pitted or burned...then why not.
Also use MB wheel bearing grease. It is green. |

Can I just add green dye to the stuff I have? Is this that important? Will hi temp bearing grease do the job?

obviously I try to leave no margin for error, so I use the correct grease.
Best regards with your project, it is too bad that you didn't upgrade to vented rotors. The braking force is much superior to the solid, stock set up. Regards. omegabenz |

I didn't buy the MB packets of grease either and everything is working beautifully. The nice thing about the packets is they are pre-measured. You don't want to overfill the hub with grease before putting the grease cap back on. I just made sure everything was coated well and that when I packed the bearings I saw at least a pea sized blob at the top of each slot in the bearing to make sure they were completely packed.

If you look over the threads about omegabenz's repairs you will see that he always goes the extra mile on everything and does a top-notch job. He even has the best of tools for the jobs too. I believe he gets them from here:
http://www.samstagsales.com/hazet.htm I wouldn't mind seeing pics of his work space.

thank you for the kind words!
Chad, I didn't know you could buy little packets of the MB green grease. I know that you can buy the little packets of anti-sieze compound to put on the back side of the brake pads to prevent squeaking. you know, if I was just doing a quick and dirty job on my daily driver, I would see what grease is currently loaded in the bearings and probably just fill up the cap with that type and call it good. You have to yank the inner seal to get the bearing out, but its a good idea to change that anyway. If you do new bearings I would definately do the Oe green grease. Also the green grease shows you if there is wear because it will change to a darker color instead of that fluorescent green color that it is. You are welcome, take care. yes, I get a lot of specialty tools from samstagsales. The job just goes so much smoother, and you don't cuss as much =) |
