How many wiring harnesses on a 95 E300D?

I will be replacing one tomorrow, but it does it seems there are more connectors under the hood than on this harness. I know the glow plugs have their own wiring harness. The one I have looks like it connects to the air condition compressor on one side and the alternator on the other.

How many more are there besides the two I mentioned?

How many? I don't really know how many, I guess it depends on what you consider a wiring harness. IMO, I think most people tend to speak of THE wiring harness, as being the primary harness for the entire vehicle. All the major power supply lines bundled together and routed throughout the engine compartment and vehicle interior. These lines can run directly to the component or end in a terminal to which several other componet lines lead to. Some people may talk about specific harnesses, but I guess that would be a case of wiring between the specific component and a primary harness terminal. How many of those types of secondary harnesses are there? I have no idea. And others might have a better answer for you.

Having said that, let us know what you are wiring and maybe we can give more input. What does your harness look like? Why are you replacing? To buy a primary harness, you generally have to give the shop your VIN number to make sure you get the exact one for you vehicle. Of course wiring diagrams are very helpful when tracking an electrical problem or replacing wiring. If you need help with a diagram let me know - I have the same model.

That doesn't sound right. I though the engine wiring harness (the one that goes bad on these models) went from the connector by the battery, behind the engine to the driver side and connected the glow plugs, A/C and injection pump. I don't think it went to the alternator.

Sorry for the ambiguity, I was half asleep when I posted this last night. I am talking about the wiring harnesses under the hood.

I am replacing the harness that is rotted. I am thinking I got the wrong one. For example the harness I have does not connectors for the intake switch over valves. Here are some pics of the harness I have. I will get more pics during the install.

I have the wrong harness. This one connects to the fuse box and the relays by the ABS controller. Unfortunately I purchased this several months ago from the dealer and they may not exchange it for the harness I am looking for...plus the invoice states no return of electrical parts.

Yeah, I wondered if you were trying to replace the main wiring harness because of the known faulty insulation problems. Although I am not yet experincing any problems, I have checked mine out and I can see that the insulation is falling apart in places. I price checked the harness, but decided to wait until I had the time and money. You can email Phil about the wiring harness, but include your VIN number when you do. He'll need it to get you the right one.
