OM606 Engine Mount - The Inside Story...

This is for Chad... :)

If you were ever curious about what lies inside an OM606 engine mount then here's your answer. I took an old, collapsed mount off my car, clamped it into the bandsaw and cut it in half. The inside contained about 1/2 cup of bad smelling brown fluid. Strangely enough, it was all water soluable and it rinsed out quite clean in the sink as you can see here:

I didn't smell mine.

But then, I didn't cut them open either. :P I read the fluid is some type of silicone. Was it thick and slippery?

Evan - Was the liquid in the upper half only or upper and lower?

It looks like oil is contained in the rubber part on each half, and there would be pressurized gas between the rubber bladder and the metal case in the bottom of each photograph.

In all fairness, it probably wasn't the liquid that smelled, rather the rubber burning slightly as it was cut by the band saw.

The liquid was slick but not thick - about the consistancy of water or light oil, it dripped readliy out of the cut line. The fluid was mostly in the bottom of the mount but there is also an "X" shaped perforation in the rubber diaphram between the sections which would allow the fluid to readily pass between them. It seemed like only a small amount leaked out when I opened it up. By my estimation, there should have been more in there based on the size of the interior cavity.

I detected no release of a gas of any kind during the cutting. There is actually a weep hole in the bottom of the mount so no gas or anything else could be contained between the bladder and the metal housing.

I believe the load is actually suspended by the concentric rings of rubber and metal at the top and dampened by the liquid in the bottom like a shock absorber. The vibration comes when the rubber weakens enough to allow the inner parts to come in contact with one another.

Thanks for the pic Evan.:D Beautiful job cutting it in half. It looks like a cutaway drawing it's so clean.

Very interesting to be able to see and figure out how it works. It looks like a complicated self contained accumulator.:D

Just what I was thinking......

It did turn out nicer than I expected... Maybe I'll take the belt sander and clean up the cut side then spray it with clear coat and mount it on a piece of hardwood as a display. :D

Chad300tdt 09-22-2008 10:20 AM

Making a display would be cool.

I've though before of making a glass top coffee table/box for my basement family room. I'd use it to display the different parts I've replaced that I think look interesting. That mount would definitely be a conversation piece.:D

I've also been collecting pics of every repair I've done. I plan to eventually make a picture book that shows the whole journey from the day I got the car to the point of having all the major stuff done. That picture book will set on top of the display case coffee table.

Sure is a complicated looking mount compared to the 617. Price is probably a little more complicated also.

That would take a large coffee table for me with all the junk I have replaces through the years. especially explaining to the wife that old engine is a piece of artistic sculpture along with the rusty muffler:eek: and ....

The none MB lover just doesn`t understand . :D.

Charlie
