engine miss - 93 300D 2.5T

My 93 300D 2.5T feels like it is missing under very light throttle in top gear. I fist noticed this 6 months or so ago, but it has gotten much more noticeable the past week or so. Otherwise, the engine is fine....starts smooth, idles smooth, no miss under acceleration or normal cruising. It only seems to happen if I'm applying very light throttle such at lowers speeds in higher (i.e., low rpm).

I did a diesel purge in the past 9 months, run B20 most every tank, and have changed both filters. I don't think it a fuel starvation issue.

Could a stretched timing chain cause the symptoms (160,000 on original chain)? Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Have you cleaned out the ALDA circuit from the intake manifold all the way back? My second guess might be accelerator linkage.
Is it fuel or is it a fluttering flapper?

Is the engine misfiring or is it just down on power?

it has a distinct misfire only under very light throttle when I am not accelerating and typically 1500-2000 rpm...enough that you can feel the car bucking. Since it only happens under very light throttle, it is hard to tell if there is a substantial loss in power while it is missing.

i would think that if it were injector related then it would happen under other conditions (i.e., idle, light acceleration, etc.). the engine runs excellent otherwise.

Check and make sure the little flapper valve just before the EGR isn't getting stuck closed or held closed when it isn't supposed to. With it fully closed, the engine will cough and misfire. Is it making any smoke when it misfires?

Also, how's the WOT power? Can you do a 0-60 in 12 or 13, or is it more like 18-20?

The 124 chassis with the turbo 602 (602.962) got 121HP and a factory 0-60 of 12.8 seconds. Perhaps you're thinking of the 87 300D or the 87 190D 2.5T, those were both quicker than the 124.128.

"Your 2.5" - i just got your message and replied to you.

"Pmari" - i have not cleaned out the ALDA circuit. i actually don't know what it is. Any pictures or descriptions?

"Pmari" - i haven't notice smoke when it bucks at speed. But it definately puffed blue smoke when it bucked warming up this morning (i've checked and know the bucking is not glow plug related).

"Tim Freeh" - power is fine, just a definite miss under very light throttle.

OK, so I just took a trip from Raleigh to Asheville (4 hours each way) and it got noticeably worse. It was earlier just doing it under very light throttle (almost coasting) at lower speeds (say anywhere less than 50mph.). On the interstate today, it was actually happening at 70mph or so when i would need to slow down for traffic. still under light throttle....when i gave it gas to maintain 70-80mph it was fine. i noticed it most going down the hills around Asheville when i was giving just enough gas to keep from decelerating while going down the hills.

it also sputtered for a few minutes after i first started it up this morning with puffs of smoke (that's new & defn not glow plug related)

could it be a bad injector? i plan to do a good diesel purge this weekend to see if that perhaps helps. Any other thoughts??

Fixed. I did a diesel purge (2 cans of LubroMoly) yesterday, and really ran it hard while purging. It must have been a clogged/bad injector or injector pump because it is running smooth now and no longer missing as it had been doing earlier.

Same thing

I have the same car 1993 300D 2.5 Turbo. From time to time mine does the same thing. I simply pour a quart of automatic transmission fluid in the fuel tank and it clears up. It was never my idea to put a ATV fluid in my tank. I have a friend that has been a Mercedes Mechanic at a dealership for 26 years. He told me...I am not sure why it works but for my car it does.
