steering wheel and combo switch
Ok, is removing the steering wheel as easy as removing the ceneter bolt and pulling it out??
Also how do I gain access to change the combo switch (wipers, turn signals)? this is on the 83 300sd (W126) thanks |
Yes, the wheel comes off after you remove the center bolt. Not sure about the combo switch.

Once you get the steering wheel off getting at the combo switch is pretty easy. Be careful removing the hex bolt that holds it on. It should be on very tight. May help to heat it up before trying to turn it off. If using a wrench be sure to keep it straight. - th

Remember to score (mark) the position of the wheel, only one I had off was a 96 which had a factory mark and was fine.

--my turn signals have not "self cancelled" for, lets just say "awhile.."
My old Fords used a plastic "cancel cam" that broke over time.. Riding a motorcycle, I was "okay" with just turning the signals off myself. That said.. Today, I can't use my RIGHT turn signal... The switch won't go "up.." That said-- all the other "switches" work.. -->dimmer, left signal, wipers/washers.. So I'm assuming the cancel cam has just "fallen" into a "bad place..." Again, thinking back to my "blue oval" days, these were a separately replaceable $2 part.. Any chance of Ma Benz doing this?? If so, has anyone done one?? Is it worth the time, or should I start looking for a replacement stalk?? |
You don't have to remove the steering wheel to change the combo switch. Just pull the rubber boot away and there are two screws that hold it all in.

well, THAT answers ONE question.. (schweeeet)..

Are the wires for the combo switch connected with a plug somewhere, or are they all soldered on?
|
Actually-- I applied uh, FIRM steady pressure on it, and it's working again.. Probably won't deleve into that, as I'd rather get a radio back in it, and the A/C ready to be charged..
I'm not seeing the rubber boot that was discussed... Are you talking a 123, or 126?? I've got a 300SD (126) in this case.. Interstingly, I'm about to part my 240D-- I'm grabbing the switch out of there to be my replacement, should they fit up.. Aj |
