w124 "under the dash"

Yesterday I have pulled the dash on my '87 300TD and this is what I found:
1. broken/unhinged shut off flap operated by the center vent pod
2. cold air flap operated by the diverter pod "fixed" in a stuck position with some kind of putty

Initially I was going to simply simply swap out a cracked dashboard, but now I feel like a need to take a closer look at all the "guts" and make it right.
Any ideas why would someone put that kind of "fix" on the car? Is it because they did not want to spent extra few dollars on pod replacements and "make" the cold air come out of the center vent?
Also, next to the glovebox, there is a little electric motor attached to a hose with electric wires that had been cut. I suspect it had something to do with the Climate Control function? Any help will be appreciated.

Sounds like someone who didn't want to spend the money or wait for parts before slapping the dash together, scary.

The blower motor is the "aspirator" blower. It sucks air over the inside temperature sensor to determine whether the climate control system should be heating or cooling.

post some pics of the carnage! Always wanted to see guts of dash on my 124.

Ive got my center vents wedged open with a bottle cap. Pissed me off on 100 deg days to have ac blowing out of defrost, the fix is too involved for me...

Will do. This weekend will be a "do or die" weekend since it will be a bit of challenge to me to rememeber where all the pieces belong...
