'92 300D power loss and black smoke???

I’ve noticed some interesting issues with my “new to me” ’92 300D 2.5Turbo. There are basically two different conditions where I’ve noticed this malfunction.

1. Highway speeds – at 80 MPH and 3200 RPM there is a distinct power loss and a small amount of black smoke from the exhaust. If I back off the accelerator a bit and let the MPH or RPM drop the power returns and the car can again accelerate to the above condition. Again, the power drops out at 80/3200.

2. During a hard acceleration from a stop I’ve noticed the same power loss and smoke at various speeds and RPM’s but it’s by far more intermittent.

In the past few days I ran two cans of the Molly Diesel Purge through the engine and added a can of BG 44K in the fuel tank.

Should I remove and clean the EGR? Any ideas would be very appreciated.

Thanks,

Brett Naquin
