Hit bump, dented oil pan, now car is slow? Please help
Well, I was going along a canyon road in my '78 300d and forgot about the large dip covered in scrape marks in the middle of the lane. I hit it fast enough to bottom out the front suspension and managed to dent the oil pan . I immediately pulled over to inspect the damage. The tranny may have also made contact with the ground, but more on that later. No difference in idle speed or smoothness, but I did hear a tapping sound that went away after a minute or two and the exhaust seemed to be quieter. When I drove off, the car seemed noticeably slower, I know these cars are slow in the grand scheme of things, but it is now painfully slow.
So now here's what I've checked out so far. The linkages are moving fully, I did a tranny service including filter change and full fluid exchange, i adjusted the valves earlier this month, removed exhaust and checked for dents or clogs, changed air filter. Does anybody have any ideas? BTW, I still have sufficient oil pressure. Thanks, -Daniel |

Could be engine oil starvation, not good. Remove the lower pan and check for pump and suction tube damage. Put a block of wood over the dent and try to flatten it with a hammer by hitting the wood.

How's the oil pressure? I'm Fi. Be careful as you might have hit the oil pump and might be suffering from oil starvation. Do not run the engine anymore before you make sure everything is ok.

I have to wonder if you did not somhow kink the pickup or otherwise obstruct it. Volume of oil flow would be reduced and technically your oil pressure should reduce as a consequence. If it has not then I have to asume all might be well in there.
If you have the same normal oil pressure you had before I might check the brake system. Jack up each corner of the car and make sure all wheels are turning freely. Or feel each hub for getting too warm. Seriously bent front end components might also give additional drag but normally you would feel something unusual in the steering of the car. How big of a dent in the pan are we talking abouit here? What also bothers me is the new tapping sound that went away. Plus the change in exhaust sound. I guess you do not have much alternative to removal of the lower oil pan and inspection. Your oil pump is shaft driven on your naturally aspired model I believe. Keep an open mind as it is already a little strange at least in my mind. Come to think of it the easiest and quickest way to clear the chassis of any serious drag suspicions is to see how easy the car pushes by hand. Last edited by barry123400; 09-23-2008 at 08:47 AM. |

Is it possible that you crushed the exhaust pipe? An exhaust restriction will idle just fine, but will kill power at higher rpm.

I agree although a visual inspection as he has done may not be enough. Loosen down the headpipe as this is a na engine and test. Before doing anything else though for the low effort involved I would inspect that oil pickup in the pan. If your oil presure is somewhat lower than before it is mandatory in fact.

slower than usual 300D
Roger what MayDayMike said. Check exhaust first before digging into high cost?manhour items.

I agree that you need to drop the lower oil pan and look at the pickup tube.
Perhaps there is a remote possibility that you kinked or bent a fuel line, reducing fuel flow. It doesn't seem likely but feeding the engine with diesel from a soda bottle under the hood and seeing if performance increased would quickly rule it out. I believe he said he removed the exhaust and checked it for problems.

I'm going to guess that you also bottomed out the fuel lines... either that, or the gunk in the tank got swirled and you now have a plugged fuel filter.
let us know what you find.

Thanks for the help. I've inpeceted all the fuel lines, none seem to be kinky (lol), pulled the soft lines, blasted each one with 150psi shop air as well as the filter. I'm getting a new pan later today, so the pan will be off for further inspection and hopefully, i won't find metal parts. As far as the exhaust goes, I pulled off the muffler and felt no difference (aside from the weird looks for sounding like a tractor), i will disconnect the collector to see if the problem is between that and the muffler. If it still persists, manifolds will be inspected. I'll try the bottle trick, i've still got my one reserved for diesel purge to rule out the lines.
