99' 300td transmission dipstick
So I'm about ready to change my transmission fluid and filter. I ordered the repair manual dvd and have been looking over it. I also ordered the transmission dipstick from Phil over at special tools. I got it today and when I inserted it I realized that the dipstick is a lot longer than it seems like it should be. I was expecting the handle of the dipstick to be level with the tube but thats not the case. I have at least a foot more than that. Is this normal or did I get the wrong part?

Why do they make it like that? I just don't know how accurate it is because the actual fluid level measuring part with the lines on it is made of a flimsy plastic so when you insert the dipstick in the tube you have to be really easy and careful because if you push it in there too hard the plastic part bends over when it hits the pan and you aren't getting an accurate reading.

Made to work on any MB car OR truck with a 722.6 transmission.
Designed to read correctly from the bottom of the trans pan.

I found it helpful to practice feeling it hit the bottom of the pan before doing the fluid change. The end of the stick is flimsy and if you apply too much pressure it will hit and slide along the bottom of the pan an additinal 1/2" giving a false reading.
Mine was a very tight fit, once confident I could "feel" it hit bottom, I marked the top end with tape for reference. Allowed me to slow down just prior to reaching bottom.
