Reverse osmosis (It osmosis works, but it ain't good)
ooh-key, now that I've gotten on here and have discussed my locked boot problem, here's another problem that maybe I can pick your brains about. My wife's 300D has been having trouble with it's reverse gear for sometime now, usually taking much acceleration to get it to back up, especially up hill. Lately, the old boy doesn't want to do that either. All forward gears are fine, and the tranny fluid is good. We've had the car for almost 2 years, and I've never had any work done to the tranny. I bought a new filter and gasket last year, but have never changed the tranny oil and filter, although I will say it looks clean and clear (not burnt). It's getting to the point of having to look for strategic parking spots. (pull through double spaces, slopes for the back-out spaces, cuss at people who pull up nose to nose at the pump, etc.) Anyone recognize the loss-of-reverse-but-not-forward symptoms listed here? Could I be so fortunate as to only have to change the filter? Help. This isn't my month, guys.

May be an external reverse band adjustment on your transmission. Check archives.

thanks, men. Any suggestions on how that would be accomplished? I guess I'm not entering the right search words, because I'm not coming up with much. Even if you could give me a link to an answer, I would really appreciate it. Lee

Mine thunks when it goes into reverse so I may be facing a similar problem later. I looked up these threads:
722.120 Trans Losing Reverse http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=151936&highlight=REVERSE+BAND To summarize problem the adjusting bolt is hard to get at and it appears most of them are purposely sheared off at the factory with special bolts for that purpose and whats left of the bolt may be held in with Thread Sealant.

Diesel 911- you may have the same issue( probably not, I think they all do to some extent) , but there is no external band adjustment on the later 722.3xx tranny commonly used on the W123 and W126 turbodiesels.
This is on the 722.1xx trannies used on OM615 and 616s and non-turbo OM617s. Rick (been there done that)

Pictures! That's what I needed. I would end up cranking on the wrong bolt and really **** things up if I didn't see it with my eyes before attacking. (I'm from Missouri, you know) And since my Haynes manual is locked in my trunk that I can't get opened, along with the bulk of my tools, these links are a big help. Thanks again. I did find a thread in the search that said a girl actually reached up and turned the nut with her hand while it was on the mechanics rack, and fixed it herself. That alone was enough to lift my spirits. Thanks again people. Keep any more pics or links coming. Meanwhile, I've got to gather tools.

Quote:
What is happening is I get a harsh reverse engagement when the trans fluid is cold. After it is warmed up engagement it is only a little abrupt.

Nope- no external adjustment on the later ones. But, as long as you have reverse...keep driving

What year 300D are we talking about? If its the 81 in your sig, that has a 722.3xx with no external adjustment.
The clutches are most likely worn out. Out of the three 722.3xx tranny's I have had apart all three had reverse(b3) clutches worn much worse than the other clutches. All between 210,000 and 240,000 miles only one was still working correctly but worn out.

The 81 300D , unlike your 81 300SD, still had the NA OM617 with the old 4-bolt 722.1xx. The SDs always had turbos and probably got the first of the 722.3xxs

Yeah, it's a non-turbo. I was pretty sure it's a 617. I'm busy massacring my trunk latch cover right now. It's not as fun as I had hoped it would be. I'll never by another "easy release" chuck as long as I live. Back to work. Once I have the trunk open and get to my tools, I will jack it up and find that bolt\nut. Thanks for the replies. It helps to see someone is still checking ansd suggesting. As I told mobeta a while ago, I'd rather get robbed than have to do what I'm doing right now. How depressing.

I'm grinning...can you feel me grinning? I'm a happy boy
Well, I can't tell you all just how much I appreciate this forum and your help. Yesterday, the trunk lock...Today, the reverse band. Ahhh...what a great feeling. Thanks 911, for the pics. I dug deeper in the search system and found out as much as I could, and all I can say is You Were Right. I read one thread where a guy was told by a mechanic that it would cost $2,800 to rebuild his tranny without the mechanic even looking at it! This is almost as good as a steak dinner with sex for desert. Boy, do I feel mellow. I'm grinning. Can you sense it? THanks, everyone. I love you guys. (In a plutonic way)

I continue to be astounded by the success rate for this little tweak.
I wonder how many good W114s W115s W116s W123s made the slow one- way trip to China just because that adjustment bolt backed out. How many pockets were emptied? Rick
