Automatic transmission fluid type...automatic transmission number

I am ready to buy my automatic transmission fluid, but after reading the dvd repair manual it seems as if there are three different transmissions for a 1999 E300TD. How can I find out which one I have? I am also having a hard time figuring out which transmission fluid to buy. There is a part number listed on the DVD but that number isn't matching up to any of the MB transmission fluids I see online. I would really prefer to use the same fluid that was filled at the factory. Advice would be appreciated.

See post #3 & 5. Cheapest place to buy Tranny Fluid for my '97 E420 eith 722.6?

I used the newer (722.9) fluid in my trans. I've been pleased with it.

To my knowledge, ALL diesels from 97 on got the 722.608 trans.

The repair manual DVD is confusing me somewhat. It list three different transmissions for my year and model. 1. 722.329/371
2. 722.438
3. 722.508/509

What does all that mean? They all have slightly different fluid capacities also.

dot 438 was used in the 96's.
dot 5's never came to the US.
dot 3's are even older than the dot 4's.

Your trans is a 722.608.

The DVD is quite confusing. One unusual thing it said was when doing an engine oil change to remove the air cleaner housing. That made no sense to me. The DVD is also saying that when doing a transmission fluid/filter change to remove the front exaust pipe. Is that necessary?

No to both in my expirience.

Pretty basic. Pull belly pan, drain pan and torque converter fluid, drop pan, let drain some more, install new filter and pan gasket. tighten pan hold downs to 8lbs.; is almost finger tight.

Keep it dust, dirt and lint free.

i'd get a pan magnet too.

Ok thanks a bunch for your help. One last question, where can I get a pan magnent, and where does it attach to, the inside or outside of the pan. And how does it fasten to the pan? Thanks

It sticks itself to the inside corner of the pan over by the filter.

Dealer has them. Are about 1.5" sq. and 1/8" thick.

Well I was about to place an order with Phil for my fluid and everything else needed to do the job but unfortunately he told me that he is no longer shipping transmission fluid because he had to many problems with the bottles leaking. I am going to have to find somewhere to order my fluid from because after speaking to the MB dealer, their prices were outrageous:

1. Transmission Fluid $19.13
2. Pan Gasket $17.50
3. Filter $19.69
4. Drain plug gasket $1.50
5. Convertor plug gasket $1.50

Got my transmission fluid today. I ended up ordering it from partsbin.com because Phil no longer ship it and they were the cheapest. I have no idea what fluid I have though. Here are some pictures. Please tell me if this fluid is ok to use in my tranny. Thanks.

That is the correct fluid that came in the 722.6 trans.

You may also use the fluid for the 722.9 in your 722.6 trans. Its backward compatible. That part number is A001 989 43 03 10.
