Wastegate Location

Hey gang,

I'm sure that this has been covered somewhere but I can't find it so here goes.

Where is the wastegate cover that I have to remove. I found a cover with 4 bolts that have metal flaps folded up to the flats on the bolts. Is that it or is it where the black rubber hose runs down from the top of the turbo to some kind of valve. Any links/pictures would be greatly appreciated. Also, can't seem to find the articles that I had concerning turbo adjustment. They were written by a gentleman named Stu as I recall.

Thanks,

Matt

Matt,

Your 2nd guess is correct. The wastegate cover is the part in the picture that is below the compressor housing that the wastegate hose connects to.

Try doing a search for posts by Richard Easley, I think he posted a link to the site you are looking for.

Thanks! Found the articles. Man, I couldn't find them to save my life. Only because I need them!

I'm sorry, but I don't understand about the cover. How does it come off? What comes off?

If you grab the cover (as is) and try to rotate it, it will spin inside the housing. But it won't come out because there is a retaining ring in there. Clean the crevice around the OD of the cover and you should be able to see the ring. Use a small flat head screw driver to force the ring out out of its groove. Once, you get the ring out, you can tap or pull it out with little force. After that, you should see the end of the wastegate valve and the adjusting and locking nuts. Getting the ring back in is a pain, so make sure you are up to the task. The other alternative would be to get a manual boost controller.

Matt,

Below is a cutaway of the turbo on my car. I got this picture out of my MB '82 sales brochure. You should be able to see the U tube, wastegate hose, etc. Follow the wastegate hose to the cover which is chromed in the pic and not cut in half. The cover fits in the housing which is cut away and orange/yellow in color. You should see the chrome wastegate valve and spring inside the housing. The retaining ring is in the viscinity that the green line is pointing to. Good luck.

SW

SW,

Thanks a bunch! I took a saw to all that stuff so that it would resemble the picture. Much easier to work on.

Seriously, I appreciate the help. We are so spoiled on this site. I never thought that I would ever be monkeyin' around with turbos.

Know of any good Harley sites?

Hey Mcamara Try this site for Harley info. While not quite as in depth as Mercedes Shop it is still good. I have recieved some pretty good advice.

Thanks Shoe.
Looks helpful. There are a lot of dead Harley web pages out there.

Uh oh, here we go. Good one VW!

I've been known to give Harley guys a hard time too. I like all bikes. I was out out riding with a couple of guys on Kawasakis and I had some electrical trouble. Thought I'd never hear the end of that one. In the end one of the guys and I got the parts and fixed it. Bought a shop manual while I was getting the parts. Probably a wise investment.

How's the Ducati? Is it as reliable as its Japanese counterparts?

The Ducati has never left me stranded. A quirky bike. I bought it with high mileage (30,000). A few upgrades but no rebuild yet. It runs great but the maintenance is a little more. clutch, valves, etc. Well worth the money, a different ride altogether than my other Jap bikes.
