Call them back and tell them your car just stopped running. Slip the towtruck driver a few bucks to STFU if he starts asking questions. Tell them you need a flat bed because thats what the manual says.

Believe me, I've tried everything, I argued with them on the phone for over an hour...they weren't going to budge. Weird, because this is the first time AAA has ever let me down.

The "supervisor" basically told me that they wouldn't tow it because I purchased it in an "inoperative" state, and when I tried to say that it ran, and now it won't start, she said that our entire conversation had been recorded, and I was contradicting myself basically. No, they will not tow it unless it's registered and tagged, and was running, then suddenly broke down on the side of the road. She also mentioned that it can't look like it's been sitting for years...so I guess that means they don't tow dirty cars??

The AAA Membership is for ERS, Emergency Tow Service. You could probably still use that same tow co. to haul it for you, but it will be out of pocket expence.
Even with the AAA Membership there is a limit to how many service calls or tows come with it.

So is it home yet???

I have a can of Kroil I picked up at NAPA, think it was $12.99. used it on some rusty nuts at the turbo and they came right off. do have to let it soak some to work in. great stuff.

Alright, I got the 300D home (got AAA to tow it finally), but all is not well...it doesn't want to start.

The glow light doesn't illuminate at all, the engine just cranks...and it has the old loop style plugs, and the system seems really weird to me...does anyone have any insight on how it works? Looks like the glow relay is under the driver's kick panel, but I don't hear it click or anything when I turn the key to the on position...

The starter also sounds a bit funky...it will crank the engine, and then all the sudden it will like let go or something, and it just sounds like its spinning. Does this mean the starter needs to be replaced?

Thanks guys!

The loop style plugs are in series. You should get a meter if you do not have one to troubleshoot with. For starters if one glow plug is open like series christmas lights none of them work.

Another important test is to see if you have twelve volts at the head of the glow plug chain near the firewall. There is a fuse on the firewall you can find by following the wire from the last glow plug to the firewall. Check it for being good and not having oxidized terminals. Last but not least the glow plug relay. If you suspect that try getting one from a salvage yard. They are expensive new.

Most of theses cars that had the relay you need have to be prior to 1980 0r 1981 when mercedes incorporated the parellel plugs. The relay then is out in the engine compartment. The junk yard route is not too bad as most older diesels were not scrapped because of a bad glow plug relay.

Alright, it's about time I updated this thread and shown you guys what has consumed just about every last minute of my free time since I brought it home...I've had to do a bunch of work to it, including replacing a couple of the injectors, cleaning up the glow plug system, replacing the seats, cleaning just about every single interior piece with a magic eraser (works wonders, btw) and I just finished replacing the dashboard, and polishing the paint.

I'll let the pictures do the talking...

Almost done...

NO CRACKS!!

The list of repairs needed at this moment:
-Replace Starter
-Replace missing door trim
-Replace darkened tail light
-Replace disintegrating carpets
-Replace bent grille
-Replace hood star
-Sand and Repaint wheels

This car has had a hard life to say the least.

Yea, my son has a couple of earrings, or did until the holes grew back. He couldn't wear them at his job.
He also sports a tattoo. He got "tetelestai" down his left rib cage. Looks good and he is still skinny enough to pull it off.
Plus, that is the Greek for "It is finished", the last words of Jesus on the cross. How could a parent have a problem with that? Good kid....... {uh, but he does not pull dashes}

No, he's not my son, that's not what I meant lol.

I still haven't taken the pics, I pulled the car into the carport, and got a phone call that my great grandmother is in the hospital and had to rush over. :[

Snapped some late night pics just for you guys!

She's starting to look like a Mercedes again!

Dear Prudence,

Here's the bad stuff:

The deteriorating carpet. Do you guys think an auto upholstery shop would have this color in stock? I believe it's called bamboo.

Your floor mats will clean up. Amazing what they will come back from. Finding the side carpet in correct color will certainly be a challenge.....

Where did you find an uncracked replacement dash??? I need one for my 85! Blue would be perfect but I'd settle for black.

Jeremy
