Puffs of black smoke

I am getting puffs of black smoke on my 82 300d turbo at red lights . It does not happen if I drive like grandma, but appears after higher speed travel. Should I start looking at the ALDA system? It was given a valve job circa 5000 miles ago. The mechanic said there was some slop in the timing chain.

Thanks.

It is a diesel, they tend to do that when over fueled or under load

Black smoke tends to means more fuel less air (fuel is richer). If your ALDA has not been touched, then start at the basics... Check for timing chain stretch, injector pump timing, and etc. Or if your ALDA has been touched, then adjust it back in by 1/8th turn increments clockwise to make it leaner and see if improvement in the smoke.

Smoking

No I haven't touched the ALDA. Since it does not do it tooling around town, only after getting off the freeway or hard city driving, I thought it may have to do with the fuel mixture when the turbo is running staying rich once the rpm's decrease. Please advise.

Bad injector(s)? Does it idle rough? Fuel consumption up? If you have a bad nozzle, you can burn a piston, watch for black smoke above idle.

My fellow mechanic friend use to have a old crown vic when it first started up the fan belt would slip make a noise. We use kid him all the time about it his response was least i know it's working when it doesnt i'll know it's broke. When a old idi doesn't smoke i'd be concerned..

Again, cover the basics first... Check air filter (make sure it is not clogged), Check timing chain stretch (your mechanic stated there is slop in the chain), check the valve lash (it may have changed after the breakin of the valve job) and check the injector pump timing. If your injectors are still original after the valve job or even if you haven't done this yet, pop check them and have the spray pattern checked. Also I would look at your turbo, make sure it is not ingesting oil and it spins freely.

Along with the above have some one watch your tail pipe smoke as you one at at time loosen and tighten the Injector Hard Line nut up by the Injector (wear old clothing). If it stops smoking when you loosen one of the Injector lines that is the problem cylinder.

It may also be that your 5,000 mile ago Valve Job now needs the Valves adjusted due to them seating in.

While the Valve cover is off take a good look at the Valve Stem Seals; maybe one is loose.
