Help: lots of oil at the manifold area

Please see attached photo.
Where does this oil come from (lots of oil between manifold and engine)?
This is for 1985 300D Turbo Diesel

Thank you,

Steve

Ah, you have a California version just like mine. When I had an oil leak like that it was streaming back from the turbo-to-intake manifold junction – the o-ring seals in the interface were old and leaking. Otherwise, the oil could be coming from the gasket between the valve cover and the head – any idea when that gasket was last changed?

Hi Jeremey
Thank you for the reply.
Over 2 years ago, I took the car to an independent Mercedes Shop for valve adjustment.
May be the valve gasket was not properly seated?

I would clean/degrease that area really good. Then you can keep an eye on it as the oil is probably seeping very slowly. Check that turbo oil supply pipe really good.

I have similar issues, another member notified me that the steel rings that border the air passages in the original mani gaskets fail due to expanding and shrinking.

I also have some oil in my manifold from my failing vacuum pump. If you are experiancing any rough shifting, door lock issues, shutoff issues you should consider learning about your vacuum pump.

have a new gasket that I will install as well as a new diaphram, also route your crank case breather with a hose to the ground, it will keep your intake manifold cleaner at the sacrafice of a drip of oil.

When I got my Car the whole engine was Oil soaked. After it was cleaned off I found that it was the Valve Cover Gasket. After that was change I found out that fixed 95% of my oil leakage problem.

If your Indy did the Valve Adjustment and did not charge you for a new Valve Cover Gasket there is a good chance it was not changed during the Valve Adjustment.

The Valve Cover Gasket is at least one part that will not cost vary much to buy.
