Perhaps you could set up hidden cameras and take it to a MBCA concourse.

Seriously, what are you going to do with this?... I can't imagine the amount of man hours for prep work it would take.

yeah its going to cost you more in sand paper than you paid for it. I'd like to buy a project car like that and just re-do it myself. I just don't have the room for it.

one idea

Soda Ash, maybe?

Yes, there will be a lot of sanding; maybe I should invite all the other members up for a "sanding party". I could provide parts for your wagons in exchange for labor.

Sheesh! Here I am freaking over one rusted out rear window sill!
OK, lets just try not to think about the outside for a minute:
That backseat looks to be in pretty good shape. Your 3rd row seat looks good too, but that wasn't the problem at the buffet line now was it?!
Looks like some rot in that trough over the firewall. Hopefully it just "looks" that way.
Nice tail lights and reverse lights!
That one tire looks to have good tread.
So, you just shipped off a rear hatch? Pity.....
All in all, you have a pretty nice drivable parts car, which could end up being much more with a whoppin amount of body work. Whoppin!!
You've wanted to be in The Club for quite a while now. Careful what you wish for in the future!

The hatch I shipped though was not as good as this one.

So, I have what? 2 or 3 rusted window sills, right?

I seriously doubt that is rust inthe trough --- just "compost" from rotten leaves.

This car has fallen on bad times in recent times --- one of the previous owners must have taken VERY good care of it ....he replaced the radiator and engine (used); then had the used engine rebuilt. Yes, it was an MB import place and I have receipts in hand. The proof though is in the engine......sound.....and lack of blowby. No cap movement, no steam, no smoke.

No chips on any of the rear lights.

Tires were replaced recently.

Well, should I fix it or junk it?

I don't think a sanding party would be the best course of action, perhaps a deconstruction and detailed cataloging party?

Then you can get the body stripped, and finally paint.

It would most certainly be cheaper to find a body donor, though that may be in Texas, Cali, etc.

Hey daw,

There does seem to be a bit of body work needed. I wouldn't let that scare you off yet. I'd clean all the dirt and leaves out of everything, clear all the drains and flush them with a hose. See if you have any water leaks. Then start poking around with a screwdriver. See how bad the rot is and how much.

I think it's quite possible to save this wagon. If you know how to do bodywork, it's not that big of a deal, unless the rot is worse than the pics indicate. I'd use an appropriate stripper to get the color changes off before I'd start sanding.

Let us know how it looks after a thorough cleaning.

Good luck!

Chameleon is for sale.

I guess I'll have to take photos of it since all the Photobucket links are broken.

Anyone want to make a serious offer? I will start a thread in the Cars section, so please do NOT reply to this thread.

Post more pics when you can. What's the engine and third row seat look like?
Third row seat looks VIRGIN --- I was in a hurry yesterday, so didn't snap any of the 3rd row seat. Has the seat belts, 2nd row seat headrest, original wagon first aid kit, and comes with the quite rare wagon warning triangle.

You know --- the 2nd & 3rd row seats, wagon warning triangle, and wagon first aid kit are probably worth about $600.

Is is possible to strip a layer of paint at a time?

I don't think it's possible.

I'd go to an auto paint store and get some aircraft stripper. The fumes are pretty strong, but it makes quick work of turning the paint into a goo you can easily scrape off with a plastic blade. I'm sure that Chameleon will need several applications to get through all those layers.

Some new pics.....
and yes, it has a wagon Euro warning triangle (not shown in the pics) that comes with it.

The red X is the wagon first aid kit.
The green circled area is where the euro warning triangle rests.
Yes, Chameleon has the euro warning triangle.
