Manual Shifter Boot
How do you replace the manual shifter boot in a w123? Mine is all crumbly and has huge holes in it
I know, it is probably really simple to do, but I don't see how it is attached. Is there any potential problems that may have been caused by it being open? I found a bottle cap in there when I was cleaning the car out Should I do anything to clean it while I am replacing the boot, other than just picking out any other obvious debris I find?

The bottom of the boot just kind of pops into a plastic retainer. If you can grab a hold of one corner and pull straight out it should pop out and then the rest will come right out. The shifter knob screws off. I'd clean all the dust and debris out and if you feel like the gear shifter is hard to move you might lube up the base of it.

OK thanks, I figured it was something like that, but didn't want to break some plastic if it was the wrong way to get it off.
I may have to put a plastic bag around it for the moment , because I have other things that are higher up on the list, but I will snap the bag in place like I would with the boot

Turns out I just sewed a new shifter boot out of some black naugahyde I had lying around using what remained of the rubber one as a pattern. I cut the base of the rubber boot to hold the new one in place on the console like a rubber band.
I would have made a DIY out of it, but it isn't likely anyone else would be cheap enough (or handy enough with a sewing machine) to do that over the $30 or whatever it costs for a new rubber one Actually looks pretty good though, you'd never know!

Buying a $12 boot is a little easier than learning to sew.

Sewing is an invaluable bit of knowledge.

I can sew a little bit! But I don't think I need a new boot yet... so we'll see...
