82 240D oil separator

My shop manual shows a cyclone oil separator in front of the air cleaner for the 82 240D. A bit confusing since my 82 240D came to me without it (valve cover vents right to intake manifold), but uses oil like mad. The manifold has the bolt pattern to mate w/ the separator, but not sure I saw a fitting for the drain on my block.

Is anyone familiar w/ this system?

Yours should have it. Somebody probably removed it and put the old style in its place.

Somethings missing. The manifold has the mounts for the seperator but I don't find a drain port on the block. The support arm doesn't match- someone used a big washer stack to build it up to level.

The egr system seems to match '82, so some splaining needs to be done.

does the old style manifold have a seperator built in?

Anyway, federal hts? I lived in ft collins back in the days of skylab and moonshots 74-77 i think.

The drain port is a tube that runs down to the upper oil pan. In the attached picture you can see the tube at the bottom of the separator.

Put a BB in the vacuum line going to the EGR valve.

Nope, its just a plain-jane tube.

Something is weird.

This sounds something like what I did on my 82. When I got the car it had the oil separator along with the huge intake/exhust/egr combo (has the butterfly valve). I didn't want the egr and all that linkage, so I found a set of the older manifolds in a junkyard. When I bolted it up, I noticed that the support arm does not line up perfectly with the tab on the manifold- I just secured it with a hose clamp. I blocked off the drain to the oil pan ( I wish I had reused the oil separator). If you look at the front passenger side corner of the oil pan you should find the drain on the top of the upper oil pan.

But you say your has the EGR manifold-odd....

cyclone oil separator

car: 1983 240d 4 speed with over 240k miles. Question: My cyclone oil separator looks like it is about to rot off and is seeping oil down the line that extends below it. Is this an easy weekend job to do if I wanted to tackle it myself? Any feedback is appreciated. Just to make sure I'm talking about the right part, image is here:

part numbers

If anyone is needing to do the job, sharing some part numbers that I used to replace my cyclone oil separator, tubes and o-ring....

Cyclone Separator:
616-010-00-62 Oelfangschale
The rest I'm not sure on - either short feeder tubes or o-rings....
616-016-03-81
616-016-02-81
617-016-02-81
and oil got to the last numbers on this label before I could write it down:
006-997-xx-xx

Not a hard job except for that one screw in the side of the engine that secures the drip tube going down to the oil pan. Definitely did not have the right tool for that little bad boy.

Blockage in Separator Path?

Hi there...

I have an '82 240D and recently a lot of pressure is building up and blowby is coming out of the valve cover tube and a tight fitting oil cap...the top of the engine and filter lid is covered in black oil "dust".

I tested what I could reach to see where a blockage could be and air is flowing through the separator to the manifold.

If the drain tube from the separator was blocked, I wouldn't think that would case pressure to build up, would it?

Tools and money are stopping me from a DIY or mechanic fix at this point.

Should I vent the blowby to the street from the separator with a long hose or, route from valve cover direct to manifold in the meantime?

Or, is there something else causing the pressure to rise?

I've driven the car for 5 years and 180k miles... this has just started to happen.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Jonathan
