The only problem with the warranty is that it would be exceeded after approximately a year and a half because of the miles per year (33000). Warranty is for 4 years 50,000 unless I buy the extended which might not be a bad idea is this instance. I need to find out what I can get a late model e320CDI with the starmark warranty and exactly how much the dealers are charging for TDI jettas in the midwest. I'm a big fan of the 123, but my those E320CDI's are beautiful IMHO.

My last VW was so painful to own, I actually get angry when I hear people are considering buying one.
I wish I could let you drive my mother-in-law's '07 Golf TDi with only 22k kms. It is just shocking, how babdly that thing is coming apart. Rattles, squeaks, trim coming off, dash lights that don't work, intermittant heater. It's new thing is intermittant reverse (it's an automatic). Sure, it's under warrantee but it's been in 3 times for it and they still can't figure it out. Shocking. If I ran a toyota or honda dealership, I'd buy that 1 yr old golf and offer it out for test drives.

Saying a W123 isn't capable of 33,000 miles a year is like saying a unimog can't drive on grass. The W123 diesel can cover miles like no tomorrow. Better yet, get a 300SD or SDL in good condition. Who would ever throw away money on a new car?
Craig here on the forum has been putting like 40k+ a year on his W123 for years, his engine finally died at 442k or something. So if you found a good older MB diesel with 200k or less you can be certain will run a very long time indeed if you do the right maintenance. I've done 70k in my car over the past 5 years and its never let me down.

For the highway I'd get the TDI and gut the particulate filter.
That Prius would get really poor economy on the highway, its a city car. |

The Mercedes is a real car, the VW is a junker. Hows that?
Driving a CDI 33k miles next year would be a pleasure, in a VW it would be a punishment.

Audi A8 and VW Phaeton are the same cars.

In my area: Two very competent VW dealers who sell and service many Phaetons. I see many phaetons driving around where I live, and it's probably because of those nearby dealers. But VW sucks in general except the Phaeton(think bentley and not VW)

True, but with the Audi you get to go to a good dealer.

If the VW is out of warranty anyway you could take it to the audi dealer just as easily. I'm sure they'd work on it.

I'm thankful for the replies. I'm probably taking too much of a chance on the VW with no local dealer. Still have fond memories of my first diesel (1978 rabbit). The funny thing is that car was ten years old when it started to fall apart and my 300D from the same year is still going strong. Brings to mind that old saying, "...those that forget the past are condemned to repeat it".

St. Louis has some major VW dealers, but it's like a VW wasteland for the rest of the state.

The nicest W123 you can find will pale in comparison to a W211. Completely different level of economy, tech, safety and creature comforts.

To be honest, I would wait a year on the new TDIs. Introduction years are always strange for VW, parts tend to change, things get recalled / improved a lot the next year. If you are wanting something E class sized look for a 2005.5 Jetta (The most highly optioned TDIs from the factory, ever) or an 04-05 Passat. No, the Passat doesn't have the cool factor of the 'benz, but then again what else does The VW has the advantage that you can diagnose all the computers yourself with VCDS. I don't know of any solution like that for Mercedes. If you want a cheaper total cost of ownership go for the VW. If you want a Benz, that's gunna cost ya more. Its up to you if its worth it. -Jason
