What will happen if someone hits your low mile expensive w123 or w126? Will the insurance cover it? I'm afraid not.
I think fuel economy between a 320 cdi and 320 petrol is not that big and the 320 petrol might be had for a cheaper price to cover the lost economy.

The prices on the '05 and '06 CDIs seem to be dropping faster than the stock market. I see a couple of really low miles '06 (<20K) for around $30K now on ebay and many well under $30K with more miles. Seems like the market is soft, combined with many coming off lease which leads to a slump in prices. I bet by thanksgiving you will find some nice ones in the mid 20's if you are patient and willing to travel for a deal.

If this stupid economy ever turns around and I am able to start selling houses I'll buy one. Or my uncles 07 E350 when he gets rid of it in a few years.
I'd almost buy an E350 insted because they are faster, and cheaper up front. Mileage is so so though.

Something I'm not getting here: If the OP has enough money to buy an '09 model of anything, he certainly has enough to put two presumably already driveable W123's in condition for reliable daily commuting.

Its not cheap, and if you have a nice 300D commuting in it 30k+ a year is a sure way to put tons of wear on it.
Craig spent a lot of money to drive his 300D that much, not really any cheaper than driving a new one.

I recently traded a 2006 VW Jetta TDI for a 2005 E320 CDI. It felt like I traded a bicycle for a motorcycle.
The Jetta I bought new and drove 29,600 miles. No problems, except for passenger seat belt light. Nice driver, handled great, mileage was high 30s with mixed driving. The CDI gets 38mph on the open road! In the city, I am getting 26-27mph. Not bad considering the caliber, weight and prestige of vehicle. At the end of the day, I just felt safer in a Benz driving all those miles. Just my experience. |

I drove the Bluetech, and thought it felt pretty cheap. I truly believe my SDL feels better on the road than the new Benz. That's just my personal opinion though.

Our 05.5 Jetta TDI was a good car, until it was killed in a head on. It had dual climate control, etc. We replaced the 05.5 with an 06, because that is all the dealer had in 07.
My wife is the driver and drives 40 miles each way to work. She consistantly gets 48-51 mpg. 75% is highway driving. In city driving we get 42-45 mpg. Still not bad. The key to the TDI, like all diesels, is highway driving, not city.

Kevin,
I drive 55k + business miles per year. Our interstate speed limit is 75 mph. Secondary limit is 65 mph. I have owned a number of 300 sdl's and a '98 e300d. All good road machines. My wife drives a 2002 tdi 50 miles round trip to work and does 44 mpg w/a 5 speed. Road driving gives 51-3 mpg @ our speed limits. Car has been pretty much trouble free. I drive this car occasionally for my work to keep it cleaned out. I drive a 2005 cdi w/130k on it for work. At our speed limits + 4mph it averages about 40 mpg. Conditions permitting it finds itself at higher speeds or the mpg would be higher. The cdi is far more comfortable, convenient, safer than the tdi. Less wear and tear on the body on an annual basis (even without a severe accident). What I did was buy a good used '05 cdi. In my opinion, the best decision for someone with a high level of highway exposure.

diesel choice
From another perspective, at 33000 miles per year you are going to spend a lot of time sitting in a car. The Benz is a much nicer place to sit.
My personal choice though would be to spend money bringing a 123 diesel back to fresh and use it. My old 123 turbodiesel is the one car I wish I still had. By the way, we have a 2008 E320 Bluetec and I still liked my 123 better. If you must buy however, I would recommend the Benz for the above stated reason. |
