Another possible option is a single owner 1987 300D with a little over 100,000 miles from Utah. Exterior and interior are pristine. All records. Seller is asking 9000. I'm also contemplating spending a couple of thousand on the w123's and making them more highway roadworthy. Appreciate everyone's input.

FWIW I spent a little over a month researching and looking at cars. The one I finally settled with so far will cost me an estimated $6.5 and this is the cheapest I found. And this is with me doing the work that does not require a lift and much of the prep work for the painting. And this is with no upgrades. That is just to get it into stock condition.

The cars when you added all of the repairs necessary were in the US$6k - 8k range. These were all either 300Ds or 300SDs. From my experience paying US$9k for a vehicle that is truly in like new condition is a good price. Personally I would rather pay closer to $7.5k but $9k isn't outrageous.

But even though I view that as an OK price I am not so sure that I would advise you to purchase this vehicle. Around 100k miles is when you start having to replace a lot of steering and suspension components. Also accessories start failing at this point. So while you may have no material repair bills in the next couple of years you could wind up spending several thousand a year after that point. So I would lean towards finding a higher mileage vehicle with a good engine and transmission that may be more worn cosmetically and spend the money replacing all the wear parts and fixing the cosmetic problems. At that point you would have a vehicle that is closer to "as new" than this one.

A couple of facts and a question.
1. We have about 77,000 on our 05 CDI and have had zero maintenance problems.
2. Over the last 7,000 miles, my wife's average mileage according to the onboard computer is 32mpg. On a recent road trip of 60 miles, I hit 39.4 mpg.

The question: Have you driven a 320 CDI? They are beasts. I hit 130 on a deserted road and came off the accel. It was still climbing. Don't try that in a TDI.

pm me if you have any questions that I might be able to answer.
