Talking My Very Own Fuel Station

I picked this setup up off of craigslist for $125. It is a 300 gal tank and electric pump. My plan is to buy diesel or biodiesel when the prices are (relatively) low and have it delivered to my house. Bulk fuel seems to be about $0.25/gal less than pump fuel around here. Now I just have to figure out how to plumb it up.

Does anybody have a recommendation for a good filter/water separator?

There is a bit of rust at the bottom of the tank, any suggestions on how to remove it, or should I just let it settle and let the filter take care of the rest?

The bio should take care of that. Tilt the tank slightly away from the outlet
so as to still have a few gallons in the tank when the tap runs dry.

I hooked up a 10 micron and 2 micron filter in series when pumping my homebrew BD from the storage tanks. I never draw off the bottom in case any moisture is present and have had no fuel issues in over 50k miles of BD use in my vehicles

Great idea. Is that sitting in an attached garage? I'd check up on the fire codes just to be on the safe side.

If I had the room I'd do that too. Saves time and money to not have to go to public stations. Plus you're immune to daily price changes and shortages etc...

Wilco in Battle ground sells the filters that you use for in bed fuel tanks. That is what I would use. Nice set up. would do great out here!

Most states have strict regulations on fuel storage tanks that are mandated by EPA rules. If the rust turns into a leak, you will have a major environmental clean up expense (even on your own private property).

Think tank could cost you a lot more than you save in fuel cost.

Diesel is no different that home heating oil, and plenty of people have tanks of it at their house. This thing is 1/4" steel, no way its going to leak from rusting out.

How thick was the steel on the Titanic?

Brian, you might need some type on containment around the tank just incase it does leak or you have a spill.

ditto on checking with the fire codes in your area.

also might be wise to check with the fuel delivery people what is required.

when I worked for the state, it was unbelieveable of all the epa and other rules and regulations.

ya had to have a containment just to fart.

It`s not a bad idea to have fuel on hand, never know what bad thing is coming our way just over the horizon.

ya know brian, I`ll need fuel after my delivery to get back to Ca. after next week .

fuel station

anyone in mid florida need a fuel station, I have 4 of them.

plumb with black iron pipe from Lowes and a clear water pump from Northern tool ($29.99 sale now) and its good. as someone said tilt the tank away from the outlet to allow the grit to go the the other end.

that style pump has pumped BD for me for about 8 months now.

Golden rod is a good bulk tank filter that you can get at any farm type store (tractor supply). It has a clear bowl that you can check and drain water out of. With this type of filter I actually recommend tilting the tank towards the drain, and getting all of the water out so it doesn't continue to rust. It's not that hard to check and drain water out of the filter bowl.
