Replaced dash lights - thanks to Bens Lover

Just successfully replaced all the tiny lights in the dash controls of my 81 300SD - climate control, heater, antenna button, etc. Many thanks to Bens Lover and his excellent picture presentation: see his website at www.benzguy.piczo.com and look for the section on replacing the dash lights. There is absolutely no way that I could have made this repair without this just super presentation.

Thanks Bens Lover; you made my day.

Is it really necessary to take the radio out when doing this?

You bet but it's a piece of cake. Just put your hand in the hole and gently push the radio out from the rear. Mine had not been out since 1981 so it was a bit stiff but I got it out without much difficulty. If you do not remove the radio, you will not be able to remove the wood insert.

Before you do the work, however, let's get the real information on how many lights there are inside. I replaced four but am afraid I missed some because my vent sliders are much, much dimmer than my climate control, etc now after I finished. I am afraid I missed some lights.

Also get a pair of needle nosed pliers that have a right angle turn at the nose. Use them to gently pop the light socket out of the holders instead of loosening and pulling forward the climate control cluster. That way you will not need to worry about adjusting the climate control cluster to fit flush with the wood when you put it back together. My fingers were not strong enough to back the light sockets out so I used the pliers.

I took the wood panel out the other day while I was messing around with the door panel without removing the radio. 2 screws on the bottom.

Is there an LED replacement for these bulbs??

LED - not sure. The regular lamps are 1.2w #2721 w2x4.6d and are made by OSRAM. I bought ten on line for $0.58 each and $8 to ship to Atlanta. RBM dealer wanted $8 each. I am not sure how you got the wood panel out without taking out the radio. My panel has two black tabs at the bottom and the radio fit in between these tabs; do not think the wood panel would have come out with the radio fitted tightly between these black tabs. Stock Becker radio. Maybe yours is different.

Now I am looking for feedback to see if I missed a bulb or two; replaced four and that was all that I saw.
