Question My 300SD does not turn the oil black

What gives. All my other 617s would turn the oil as black as night after 10 miles, but the oil in this one is still honey colored 400 miles after the oil change. The oil was not black when I bought it too. At first I was afraid that the PO had run it out of oil and then refilled it to sell it, but I guess it just does not turn it black.

Hmmm.....I'm thinking that the oil cooler isn't/hasn't opened up to allow the mixing of the jet black oil with the amber.

Thats odd, I've never heard of any diesel not doing that. You must of changed you oil right before you headed down my way last weekend. Maybe you have an uber filter. I keep the oil uber clean!

That really sounds odd. My 81 300SD has always had black oil which begins shortly after an oil change. I wonder if something is closed off which otherwise would let your oil circulate and whether you could damage the engine? Stumped but think something is wrong. If it does not get black pretty soon, think you should look into it.

Could someone have snuck a gasser engine under your hood when you weren't looking? Never heard of a diesel that didn't turn the oil black in the first few miles.

There was a thread a short time ago that involved large amounts of ATF leaking into the crank case. Apparently, it cleaned the engine out so well that the oil was not turning black.

This may be the case with yours, though with some other mixture.

Never heard such a thing.... Maybe you have super sealing piston rings and compression in 700s?

Cool. We should all be so lucky. This way you can be like 240joe, never change your oil

That is strange is doesn`t turn black. even my new Metric motor turns dark. I have 9949 miles on it, and even with my Amsoil full flow/by pass filter along with the stock filter it is dark color. but not black. I have 1500 miles on this oil.

use to drive a 96 International dump truck at work, the oil in it stayed a light color for a long time. most of the trucks we had were black as soon at it was started.

as long as you have oil pressure and the engine isn`t banging and knocking, I wouldn`t worry about it.
Your engine might be running so effecient there is no soot .

I'd like to know your driving habits. few jackrabbit starts? mostly highway miles? do you let the motor idle much? what brand filter do you use? I suppose somebody put in some zero gap rings on a rebuild once upon a time... odd verry odd...

Many marine gen sets not turn the oil black. My Northern Lights (Lugger) with over 3000 hours keeps the oil amber.

I have an old Ford Lehman, vintage 1969 marine engine with unknown hours on it that the oil gets no blacker than a gas engine in 200 hrs, ihave owned it for 18 yrs and it has always been this way.In the same boat using the same oil i have a 3cyl Kubota generator that turns the oil real black as soon as it is run after an oil change.I have always thought it was because the Ford is a direct injection engine and the Kubota is an IDI.Anybody have any thoughts on that theory? Don

There must be something very wrong. When did some work on my 617.912 (changed the pan gasket, changed the oil filter housing gasket, and pulled the IP plate), it was draining for a good 3 days. I filled it up with all fresh oil and then went 1.5 miles to the gas station and checked the level, it was already black. lol

You might be right about the Direct and Indirect injection.
My Datsun diesel and the MB diesel both get black soon.

the 95 dump truck I drove (post #8) was Direct injection and stayed clean much longer, similar to a gas eng.
