I guess the circling vultures could be considered "hazing" for the new member.

First Mercedes wagon. We've owned other wagons, my wife loves them. She used to show our dogs traveling in a Pinto SW until I bought her a Dodge Town Wagon (see pics). The Pinto had 197K miles on it when that pic was taken, so no need to worry that the TD will be trashed. Now she does hunt tests & field trials with them, so the TD will be pressed into duty going to them. I guess you could say it's gone to the dogs!

I like that old Dodge. The Pinto should go the Ford Museum, and it was never engineered to travel that many miles.

You can bet it has had plenty of mechanical intervention over the years. Can you believe that Pintos and Gremlins and Pacers are now collectible!!!!!

Not really. Bought it from the original owner (at 104K mi, garaged) who had a record of every service performed. Only repairs other than routine maintenance were tie rods (inner & outer), starter, alternator & water pump. After we drove it many trouble free miles I had to replace A/C compressor, evaporator, dryer etc, 1 clutch replacement, 1 universal, remove cat conv, replace alt.
I had to weld in some patch panels to repair rust & repaint it after 10 years in our driveway in the S FL. weather.
One of the best cars we ever owned on a $/mi basis.
Your right about them being collectibles. Sold it on ebay for twice what I paid for the TD!!

Easier to find a TD than a Pinto SW these days. The ones that didn't go up in flames rusted away!

There's hope

Just did a cold compression test. Don't want to take a chance damaging the crank with the knock it has by warming it up.
1-420
2-350
3-320
4-340
5-320
Not too bad for 338K miles.
There was some oil on #1 glow plug, so I'm guessing a leaking valve guide seal is causing the higher reading.
Next step, pull engine & have a look at the crank & rods.
If the numbers had been low, I'd be in the market for another engine, but at this point I'm going to remain optimistic until I see what the lower end looks like.

I learned to drive stick shift on my mom's '73 Pinto sw (orange!). My mom and dad bought it new, might have been '74, and my mom kept it until maybe '94 or '95. It was a great family car, helluva first car to learn to drive stick on, but since learning on that I have total confidence when faced with any other manual transmission.

It had well over 200k on the clock when she sold it. Arizona car its whole life so no rust. My friends at the time were dying to buy it, it had a certain cache, even back in the early 90s.

Anyway,
