1983 300CD power steering pump belt

Hi all was wondering how do you get a power steering pump belt on a 1983 300CD, I can't make it stretch and can't seem to find a way to move the power steering pump to get it to fit, thanks guys!

You'll find three bolts on the front of the pump that you need to loosen to allow the pump to move. There is a bolt on the top fo the pump that is the adjusting bolt, that will loosen and tighten the pump. Loosen that bolt and you take the tension off the belt.

You can also jump it on, line it up and put a flat screwdriver in the position to pop it on, then have someone tap the starter, it will jump right into place.

Wrong and/or double wrong - because of the direction the belt turns (clockwise as you look at it from the front), the worst that happens is that it could pull the screwdriver out of your hand.
BTW, your 300CD looks to be the same color as mine. Mine is metallic silver/blue with dark blue leather and '93 15" 8-hole MB alloys.

I've tried jumping a belt like that, and ended up having the belt split at the point of contact due to the sudden stretching action.

three 13mm nuts on the front of the PS pump, hold them still, loosen the corresponding bolts from the back of the pump. then loosen the tensioner bolt that is on the machined flat part of the pump.

A new belt shouldn't split, I've been taking them off and on like that for amost 40-years of MB diesel ownership - many years ago an old indy MB mechanic showed me how. It'is important that the screwdriver is big and wide - like the Craftsman kind that often gets used for a pry bar, or substitute jack handle.

and why does direction have anything to do with camming the screwdriver and making it a projectile? you may know exactly how to do it without launching the screw driver, but telling someone to do it without photographs of the exact placement or a detailed step by step leaves a lot of open ground for mistakes

Because the direction of the rotation pulls the screwdriver, not pushes it. If you hold the screwdriver too loosely, the rotation will pull it out of your hand and fling it away from you

and if held wrong, it will go between the belt and the pully, and do damage or drag their hand in or if the edge catches and cantalevers it then it will launch in whichever direction it happens to be pointing, either way it seems like bad advice to tell someone to try to put a belt on with a screwdriver while having someone else blip the starter, hopefully the original poster will think twice and use the adjuster bolt as was designed

I was able to swap that belt out using the adjustment bolt, came in far enough.

that tension screw on the top does not look like it would serve that funtion when first looking at it. After you find it, easy to change and set tension.
And 3 bolts hiding on the front/rear.
