Talking Sunroof Happiness

1982 300SD

So, today I had begun to build and install 2 6X9 speakers where once there were the two rear dash boxes (Honestly, I'll never use them and I'd rather have the extra speakers). I took out the side pieces of carpeting in the trunk for access to where I am running the new wiring and when I did so, I found this two pieces of this little red thingie. At first I couldn't tell what it was and then I saw that the little shape inside it matched up to the one on the sunroof motor. I tried fiddling with it to see if it did anything. Like maybe make the sunroof motor go up the last 1/8" to fully close. Well, I couldn't get it to work on account of it being broken, but when I was messing with it I noticed a nut on the shaft behind the adjuster. I recalled that the sunroof motor uses a cable and began wondering if perhaps the sunroof didn't open/close without assistance because maybe it was loose or something. So, I got out the socket set and gave the nut a half turn in. Then, I bravely, actuated the sunroof towards closed. (I say bravely, because up until now it was really a gamble on whether or not I would be able to fully close the thing). It moved a little bit and so I tightened it a full turn. *clink* Joy all around. Opens smoothly and closes just as nice. Can't tell you how happy that makes me.

I had tried messing with it before. (cleaned out the tracks, got some of the special Uber MB grease for the tracks from a local mechanic friend and made sure the pop up wind deflector wasn't out of whack.) Now that it works, I can't wait to take her for a drive.

Need to finish making and installing the custom box for the 6X9's though. That and I'm disconnecting that stupid fader from this thing. I bet it will sound better when it's no longer hooked up to that archaic piece of crap.

Cheers!

I have noticed that lately when closing my sunroof on Hans(a 1983 300D), the flat bar at the front of the sunroof (that is supposed to be folded down in order for the sunroof to close properly) doesn't come down far enough, and the sunroof strikes against it and won't close. Is there some sort of adjustment that I can make to make it work better? Thanks so much in advance!

*cringes*

Weeeell. That little "thing" is called a wind deflector. If it isn't aligning properly it can lead to more problems than what you have. It may be that it is time to replace those old springs in there. Or it may just be that it needs adjusting. Either way. Here is the thread for your W123.

~ENJOY!~

That should be all you need to either adjust it or replace the springs.
